Crime Report: Hellish Taxi Ride

A look at recent crime in Holtsville.

The following information was culled from the Suffolk County Police Department's automated reporting and arrest database.

Holtsville

  • A Sayville man was arrested after he allegedly struck a fellow theater-goer for using his cell phone during a movie. The incident happened at Island 16 on June 23 at around 9:30 p.m. Police say 55-year-old Daniel Garbarino was upset that another customer in the movie theater was using his cell phone and got into a dispute with the unidentified victim. The dispute turned physical when Garbarino allegedly punched the victim in the head. Garbarino is being charged with 2nd degree harassment. 
  • Police responded to an attempted phone scam of a woman on Jenny Lane on June 24 at around 9:45 a.m. According to police the woman was contacted over the phone by a man on a restricted line who informed her that her father had been in an accident and was injured. The man demanded money to be wired to him. The woman was able to determine that her father was safe and did not wire any money to the caller.
  • Police responded to a harassment call on the on-ramp to Nicolls on June 21 at around 3 a.m. According to police, a man and woman had shared a taxi cab with three other unknown males after a night out at Dublin Deck. While the cab was taking the group to their respective locations, the male complainant got into a verbal dispute with one of the unknown male subjects. The taxi pulled over as the argument began to escalate and all five occupants vacated the taxi. While outside the cab, the unknown subject shoved the complainant, causing him to fall down at the shoulder of the road. The unknown males fled the scene, while the complainant tried to follow them, but was unsuccessful. No arrests have been made. The complainant received minor scrapes.
  • Police responded to a criminal mischief call on Half Circle Drive on June 19 at around 7:30 p.m. According to police an unknown person entered a residential property through an unlocked gate and cut the padlock on a shed in the yard. Police say it does not appear that any items were stolen from the shed.
  • Tara Sikorski, of Holtsville, was arrested in Hauppauge on June 21 for 3rd degree grand larceny.
