At Saturday's Class of 2013 graduation ceremony, class president Louis Cappola recognized a long-time Sachem resident and former Board of Education Trustee.
Charles Baack, 96, was a member of the BOE during one of the district's most prolific growth periods, from 1965-1971. His name is on the dedication plaques at six of Sachem's 18 buildings.
Baack, born in 1916, graduated high school before Sachem existed, but fondly remembered graduating the eighth grade from the Union Avenue School.
He also served in WWII. Baack expressed feeling "overwhelmed" by the honor at graduation. Watch the video of his acceptance speech attached to this story.
