Camp Hero State Park

State park shrouded in mystery is a popular location.

Though it may appear to be an innocent state park, the mystery surrounding Camp Hero is as intriguing as its size and the multitude of activities which it offers.

Located at the eastern tip of Long Island at Montauk Point, the park was originally used as a military base.  This took place during World War II and the Cold War as a result of its keen location off of the coast.  The base was decommissioned in the 1980's and is now owned by the New York State Department of Parks.

During the 1980's and 1990's the park was largely undeveloped, with a vast amount of over brush and a lack of available trails.  Camp Hero State Park officially opened to the public on September 18, 2002.

While its history as a military base explains some of the curiosity surrounding the site, there is a completely separate dimension to the mystery. Upon entering, your attention is drawn to a large radar tower, which is said to be out of use.  Despite the thought that it is out of commission, the tower has been observed to move.  The theory behind this tower is that its original purpose was to play a role in mind control as well as weather control, perhaps as a military weapon.  While it may sound illogical that this radar was even capable of such a thing, many stories have surfaced which give it credibility.

Additionally, and increasingly odd, stories exist of people whom have been involved in special training camps which occur underground on the Camp Hero site.  Stories of secret doorways leading to testing facilities, experiments in mind control and time travel have all become prevalent in relation to Camp Hero.  More commonly known as The Montauk Project, it is believed that the United States government has engaged in a series of secret experiments here, and it is unknown as to whether or not they still continue.

Visitors often approach the site, on a mission to locate underground entry ways, and gain some insight into the so-called testing facility.  Oddities exist at the park, including parking lots which are newly redone near a number of buildings marked "Do Not Enter."  This raises the questions of whom would park hear, and why?  Additionally, many unmarked vehicles and aircrafts have been reported on site, making observations.

In addition to the many internet sites, a popular book The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time by Preston B. Nichols recounts one man's recollection of his experience involved in the experiments which were thought to be ongoing.

Despite the many theories and the interest in the park, Camp Hero is an intriguing place to visit.  There is clearly a lot of history there, with many buildings remaining from its past uses.  Many bluffs overlook the water, and make for beautiful scenery and pictures.  The park offers hiking and biking trails, a beach, and fishing, picnic areas amongst other things.

Visitors can easily spend an entire day looking around the park and enjoying all of the natural beauty present.  Camp Hero provides a fun DayCation for families and amateur detectives alike.
