The Student Perspective: New Look, Same Team

The Sachem North Flaming Arrows took the field on Friday night against the West Islip Lions with new alternate jerseys. While the uniforms may have been new, the Arrows game-plan was not.

Anyone who walked through the halls of Sachem North on this rainy Friday noticed something peculiar. Today was North's Homecoming, so school spirit was in full effect as the pep rally had to be held inside due to inclement weather.

As usual, the students at North were highly enthusiastic, making pep rally a huge success. However, as the Flaming Arrows Football team took the gym floor, one could not help but notice a change in their jerseys. We are all so used to seeing the team in their traditional white or black uniforms, always with standard Sachem gold trim. But, today brought a change.

The team wore a more classic looking, darker gold, noticeably different from their usual shade. This gold makes up the jersey's entire color scheme, minus the black and white trim on the sleeves; picture a mustard color.

Through two games wearing their typical blacks uniforms, the Flaming Arrows had two big wins against Bay Shore and Northport. For tonight's game, the Arrows donned these new jerseys - throwbacks, if you will - creating a retro feel at a misty Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium where the Arrows took on the West Islip Lions.

Having never worn these jerseys before, any superstitious person would have been more than antsy. Of course, there would be no need for any of that. The Arrows went into halftime tied at 7, but prevailed by a score of 25-14 at the end of four quarters propelled by three Dalton Crossan touchdowns and one by brother, Trent.

After a convincing victory over these Lions who have averaged 36.5 points per game in the 2011 season, perhaps these alternate jerseys will be here to stay...
