Savers In Holbrook Celebrates Grand Opening

Sachem community members flock by the dozens to find hidden deals.

Savers celebrated its grand opening in Holbrook, the latest location to spring up on Long Island, with an overstuffed parking lot and packed house. Sachem residents came out as early as 9 in the morning over-filling their carts with drastically low priced goods, which were bought from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.

"This is unique, Long Island hasn't seen a thrift store like this," said Bill Tymann, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, who referred to Savers as generous and charitable.

According to Tymann, Savers and Big Brothers Big Sisters have been partners for 13 years, opening their first store in West Hampton, then moving west to Medford and now Holbrook. The Holbrook location is equipped with a community donation center providing a convenient place for residents to drop off goods in addition to the door-to-door service BBBS provides.

The donated goods were quickly moving off the sales floor instantaneously following the official ribbon cutting, marking a mark on Holbrook and the Sachem community. Men, women and children flocked the aisles in search of quality bargains close to home. The neatly organized store, by size and color, looked as if it was a new department store rather than a second hand shop.

"When you say you're going to a thrift store, you don't think it's going to be like this," said Tymann.

According to a spokes person for Savers, between Monday and Friday, nearly 5,000 items are stocked on the sales floor.  Some of the items in stock now are a full line of crystal ware, sturdy wood kitchen chairs, a maple china closet and rows upon rows of vintage and designer clothing including J Crew, BCBG, and Calvin Klein.  There is also a full selection of shoes for the whole family, appliances, toys and bedding.

As a thank you to the Sachem community, Savers will host four sales days a year including Labor day, Memorial day, Veterans day and the fourth of July where shoppers will receive an additional 50 percent off. In addition, those 55 and older receive 20 percent off every Tuesday.  Those who are generous enough to donate to the community donation center located at Savers in Holbrook will receive tax write-off receipts as well as 20 percent off their next purchase.

Savers tries to make saving money as easy for the customer as possible as well as saving the planet and boosting the local economy. All donated items that are deemed unsellable are shipped to third world nations to clothe the needy. All of the donated items come from Long Island and are them bought on long Island, keeping the money in the local community's economy.
