Sachem Patch Business Notebook, November 1

A look at the business scene from around the Sachem community.

November kicks off with less business news than usual in our area, and the reports that have come in are mixed. Here's a look at what's happened lately:

Sigma Corporation Exhibited at PDN PhotoPlus Expo: From October 27-29, Ronkonkoma’s Sigma Corporation of America showcased at the PDN PhotoPlus International Conference and Expo in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The company, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of cameras, lenses and flashes, attended the event as part of its continued celebrations of its 50th anniversary.

In addition to presenting its products, representatives from Sigma interacted with photography gurus and Sigma Pro photographers held presentations on a variety of topics. Those participating in an in-booth contest were given the chance to win a Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM prime lens, and some attendees were given a free Sigma 50th anniversary t-shirt. New products showcased at the event included the SD1, the 120-300mm F2.8, and the brand-new stabilized 150mm F2.8 macro.

J. King’s Makes ID Report’s Top 50: Holtsville foodservice distributor J. Kings Food Service Professionals, Inc. has made online industry magazine ID Report’s 2011 Top 50 Broadline Distributors list, according to The Packer. The distributor ranked at No. 30, with a 2011 annual sales volume of $187 million. J. King’s has shown up consistently on the list since 2000, an achievement that reflects notable progress such as a 14% increase in sales from 2009 to 2010 and recent 8,000 sq. ft. expansion of its Krazy Cooks Kitchen manufacturing facility. ID Report ranks top food service distributors in the United States by their sales volume.

Hailo USA Moves Headquarters Off Long Island: The headquarters of Hailo USA, the American division of a German manufacturing firm of mechanical components for wind turbine towers, is scheduled to move from its current Holbrook location to Elberton, Georgia, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The relocation involves the investment of $10 million over a five-year span, as well as the creation of 200 jobs by the end of the period. The new Elberton location will have a brand-new wind turbine component facility, and is expected to enable the company to add production capacity and allow for expansion. Hailo will be using the training program Quick Start to prepare its new workers for employment at its new facility.
