Yau-Yu is a take-out or sit-down Chinese restaurant featuring an extensive menu, delicious food and great lunch specials. The restaurant is clean and service is fast, meaning you'll have a full, happy belly in no time at all.
Décor: Yau-Yu is for the most part sparsely decorated, but the dining room is noticeably larger than standard Chinese take-out locations. Simple white walls are adorned with a handful of colorful images, numerous tables and chairs provide ample seating arrangements for patrons, and the omnipresent "glowing food board" that is a staple of Chinese restaurants is in full display behind the counter.
Drinks: Drink selection is modest, with a handful of sodas and juices available for purchase. 2-liter bottles of Pepsi were also available.
Appetizers: Over 22 options grace the appetizer menu at Yau-Yu (not including the 11 soup choices). Eight tasty fried or steamed dumplings will run you $4.80, four fantail shrimp clocks in at $4.30 and a Pu Pu Platter for two comes in at $10.25.
Grab a hot soup to round out your meal, as Wonton Egg Drop ($1.85 pt., $3.50 qt.) or Chicken with Baby Corn ($3.50 qt.) will provide the perfect balance to your dining experience.
Entrees: Despite the lackluster décor and drink selection, one place Yau-Yu doesn't skimp is the menu, which is packed full of tasty options. Choose from numerous options within sub-menus of Chow Mein, Chop Suey, Lo Mein, Egg Foo Young, vegetable dishes, diet food, and extensive seafood, chicken, beef and pork selections.
The Special Combination Platter menu will treat your hungry stomach to a variety of choices served with roast pork fried rice and an egg roll, such as Moo Goo Gai Pan ($7.25) or Pork & Shrimp in Golden Sauce ($7.55).
Additional Cantonese, Mandarin, Szechuan and Hunan style menus are filled with fantastic dishes like Butterfly Shrimp with Bacon ($10.50) served with tender sautéed vegetables, or the spicy Triple Delight ($10.50) with savory beef, chicken and shrimp in a hot garlic sauce.
Vegetarian and Dieter menus offer up some delicious options for the calorie-conscious diner, with five Moo Shu Vegetable pancakes ($6.50) or String Beans with Carrots ($3.80 pt., $7.00 qt.) being just a few of the enticing options.
Yau-Yu also features some fantastic lunch specials served between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., allowing diners to choose from over 39 different options including Beef or Chicken with Broccoli ($4.85) or Fried Scallops with Shrimp ($4.85), which are served with a choice of three different kinds of rice, and either a soup, egg roll, or can of soda. The portions are fantastic for the amount of money being spent, and you'll surely have leftovers.
Catering: Yau-Yu also serves ½ party trays for catering occasions, offering 10 different options including Pork or Chicken Fried Rice ($21.00), Pepper Steak with Onion ($30.00) and B.B.Q. Boneless Ribs ($37.00).
Service: Service at Yau-Yu is excellent. I was greeted immediately, my order was taken quickly and my food arrived in less than ten minutes.
Signature Dish: A wise man once said, "Judge a Chinese food restaurant on their General Tso's Chicken," and that's precisely what I did. Paired with Wonton Egg Drop Soup ($1.85 pt.), the chicken was tender, tasty, and had just the right amount of crispiness. The sauce was sweet and filled with tiny red chili peppers that added the perfect amount of heat to the dish. The General Tso's also came with a healthy heaping of Pork Fried Rice and a bag of crispy noodles, which, all told, left my stomach full and my mind quite happy.
