Business Spotlight: Sachem Alum Opens Deli in Sayville

Holbrook native seizes opportunity with building renovation and is planning to expand the menu.

Sayville is now home to a new deli owned by a Holbrook native and Sachem High School graduate: the Sayville Gourmet Deli & Catering, in the shopping center that houses Carvel on Main Street.

Richard DeLorenzo quietly opened his first business during Summerfest weekend and there’s already a fan base forming for the salad bar and its wide-ranging menu featuring paninis and specialty sandwiches.

He said he chose Sayville because of the community and the store presented “a great opportunity.”

“The people in this town are so terrific and it’s a perfect location,” said DeLorenzo, who graduated from Sachem in 1996.

The deli is undergoing a major external revamp, says DeLorenzo. The shopping center was recently re-faced by the landlord, with new signage as well.

“We’re re-doing everything, new façade work on the front of the store and inside we’re expanding our menu as well," said DeLorenzo.

"We hope to bring in a breakfast crowd,” he added, noting the opening hour of 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday is perfect for commuters, and 7 a.m. on Sunday is great for those who like to fish or head out early on Sunday excursions.
