Building Business in Brookhaven

An evening held to support and promote business in Brookhaven Town.

The Town of Brookhaven, along with the Brookhaven Small Business Advisory Council, sponsored a Building Business in Brookhaven event on Tuesday at the Town Hall on Independence Hill in Farmingville.

It was a well attended evening and numerous members of the business community participated in the event. Representatives from such familiar places as Dunkin' Donuts, Edible Arrangements and St. Joseph's College were present, while smaller enterprises like Teresa's Family Cleaning were also actively participating and chatting with others.

Kicking off the evening with a short address, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko agreed that Long Island was facing difficult times and many businesses have been surviving by "working through" the problems they've been experiencing.  He explained that the evening was about, "addressing any specific needs that businesses might have when it comes to money and marketing,  and 'networking' so ideas could be shared with other business owners to get an idea of how they are 'weathering the storm.'

He continued by saying, "It's tough out there and the Town is willing to do anything it can to help."

He urged people to contact either the Town or the Small Business Advisory Committee.

"All of that is part of the Town's services for small businesses," he added.

Lesko also had short questionnaires distributed so that he and his staff could assess the overall situation that small businesses are facing in Brookhaven. He also stressed that it is important to discover where Bookhaven Town is in this particular matter.

"We can look at macro-indicators and other sources, but what we really want to know is where our Town stands on the business level," he said. "The survey will help to accomplish that and will give Brookhaven a good information base to address business issues in the Township."

Lesko concluded by commenting that business is the, "backbone of the community and we want to support you a million percent."

State Sen. Dean Murray, who serves on the Economic Development Committee,  also addressed the crowd and assured everyone that Albany was working to help businesses in the State and assured everyone that, "government working on all levels is what will bring about a turn-around in our economy."

The evening continued with exhibitions by the participating businesses and workshops and break0out sessions that were given in various rooms around Town Hall.
