Bites Nearby: Oriental Sushi

Tasty, artfully crafted sushi at a great price.

Good sushi must carefully walk the line between flavor and presentation, creating a balance that pleases all the senses. Oriental Sushi located in Ronkonkoma performs this feat admirably, creating visually splendid sushi dishes that taste just as good as they look. With a spacious dining room, speedy service and a variety of unique menu options, Oriental Sushi is a great place for sushi-lovers to stop in and enjoy a scrumptious meal.

Décor: Stepping inside Oriental Sushi, you’ll find a wide-open well-lit dining room that belies the restaurant’s seemingly small location. Tables and chairs both high and low in stature are placed appropriately, the ordering and sushi preparation counters are in plain sight, and a restaurant-long bookshelf is filled with various green tea boxes.

Drinks: A wide selection of reasonably priced sodas, iced teas and juices are available at Oriental Sushi to pair with your meal. Fresh coffee and hot teas are also brewed daily.

Entrees: Basic orders of sushi come with two pieces along with wasabi and palate-cleansing ginger. A two piece order of mackerel sushi clocks in at an ultra-cheap $1.90, Tilapia is $2.40, and Yellowtail rounds out the most expensive of the basic sushi options at $2.90. In all, there are 21 different two piece sushi options at Oriental Sushi.

The Maki and Hand-roll options add a little more variety to your sushi while remaining highly affordable. A basic avocado roll with avocado, seasoned rice and seaweed is only $2.00. A Yellowtail and scallion roll will cost only $3.00. Personal favorite Spicy Tuna Roll with tuna, crispy tempura crunch and spicy sauce is only $3.75. Futo Maki, with crab stick, egg, avocado, cucumber ashinko, yamagobo and kampyo is the most expensive of the Maki and Hand-roll options at $6.00.

Where the menu really hits overdrive is the “Jimmy’s Special Fancy Rolls” section, which is filled with incredible sushi rolls containing delicious and often unexpected ingredient combinations served in creative and visually-pleasing manners. Unique options like the Fire Island Roll ($9.55) with crab, avocado and spicy tempura crunch topped with spicy tuna and scallion, or the Out of Control ($8.75) with Alaska snow crab and asparagus topped with eel slices and spicy eel sauce, are just a few of Jimmy’s excellent special rolls.

With over 34 options on Jimmy’s Special Fancy Roll menu, you’ll certainly find something that aligns with your taste buds.

Desserts: Fire Ice Cream ($4.95), a tasty scoop of deep-fried ice cream with whipped cream, cherry drizzle and a cherry on top.

Party Platters: Oriental Sushi offers three enormous sushi party platters: the Jimmy Party Platter A ($39.95), the Jimmy Party Platter B ($42.95), and the Jimmy Party Platter C ($45.95). Each includes a customizable amount of Maki and sushi rolls that will allow you to bring tasty, diverse sushi to your guests at a reasonable price.

Service: Your order will be taken quickly and food usually arrives in less than 10 minutes on a typical day. Watch as the sushi chef skillfully creates your food, taking care to cut and organize each piece of sushi or roll to perfection.

Signature Dish: The Dynamite Roll ($9.55) off of Jimmy’s Special Fancy Roll menu brings just the right amount of fish, vegetable, crunch, and heat to a sushi roll, creating a delicious combination of flavors at a great price. With salmon, yellowtail, crab, avocado, masago, asparagus and scallion wrapped tight then battered and fried, it might not be standard sushi-fare, but the Dynamite Roll is a flavor and texture combination that must be experienced by everyone.
