What's Happening at the Library this Month?

A look at the events and happenings at the Sachem Public Library.

Here's a look at what's happening at the in October:

Moreno Fruzzetti: Sunday, October 2, 2 p.m.: Pisa native Moreno Fruzzetti, known as the "Ambassador of Italian Music to America," returns to the Library to perform Italian favorites, operatic arias, and American classics. With a golden singing voice and a captivating onstage presence, Mr. Fruzzetti has received rave reviews at festivals and shows around the globe.

Abilities, Inc.: Monday, October 3, 7 p.m.: Do you have a disability or care for someone with a disability? Abilities, Inc. in Albertson, NY can help! Services include vocational training and job placement, adapted driver's education, and Medicaid service coordination. Alice Muterspaw, Associate Vice President of Consumer Service and Provider Relations, will explain how this internationally known nonprofit organization can help you reach your full potential.

Pain, Pain Go Away! Wednesday, October 5, 7 p.m.: Pain does not have to be a natural part of the aging process. Jared Caspe, DPT, owner of Head Over Heals Physical Therapy, will discuss different techniques to control pain and restore normalcy to activities of daily living. 

Destination JAZZ! Sunday, October 16, 2 p.m.: The Shenole Latimer Quartet will take you on a musical journey of the world's top jazz destinations, paying special attention to New York City, Paris, and New Orleans. Enjoy jazz at its best with compositions by Duke Ellington, Johnny Green, and John Coltrane.

Adult Day Care: Thursday, October 6, 10:30 a.m.: Learn about options for Adult Day Centers, non-residential, community-based facilities for elders who need supervised care outside the home during the day. While services may vary, most offer social and therapeutic activities, transportation, personal care, and meals.

Meet the Author: John Lanza: Shot Down Over Italy: Tuesday, October 11, 7 p.m.: Recounted by author John Lanza, this is the true tale of his uncle's experiences as a member of the crew of a B-25 Mitchell bomber shot down over Nazi-occupied Italy during World War II. This story of courage and survival shows how the human spirit can shine through the inhumanity of war. The book provides a history of the war in Italy and the contribution of air power to an Allied victory. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Wednesday, October 12, 7 p.m.: Darlene M. Jyringi, Program Director at the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center of Long Island at Stony Brook University, will discuss normal age-related memory changes, and explain when there should be cause for concern. 

Italian Movie Night: Io Sono l'Amore (I am Love): Friday, October 14, 6:30 p.m.: This tragic love story set in Milan describes the fall of the Recchi family, wealthy industrialists whose lives are undergoing sweeping changes. It's a sumptuous cinematic feast. (2009-2:00) Directed by Luca Guadagnino. Starring Tilda Swinton. Hosted in conjunction with the Suffolk Lingua Italiana Circolo. No registration required. 

Saint Francis Hospital Outreach Bus: Monday, October 17, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Take advantage of a free health screening in the Library parking lot. Nurses from St. Francis Hospital will check blood pressure and cholesterol, screen for diabetes, and take a brief cardiac history, offering patient education and referrals as needed. Adults only. No appointment necessary. 

Garden Thyme: Autumn Gold: Monday, October 17, 7 p.m.: Carolyn Zambraski will reveal which trees, shrubs and perennials will make your garden glow with autumn colors. 

Great Decisions Discussion Series: Topic: Chapter 1, Rebuilding Haiti: Monday, October 17, 7 p.m.: The January 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti struck a nation already suffering from widespread poverty and underdevelopment. Can a newly elected president help restore the country? Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson leads this monthly discussion series on global hot topics. Pick up a copy of the readings at the Welcome Desk. This is the final meeting in 2011; Great Decisions will return in March 2012. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. 

The Food of Love and Opera: Tuesday, October 18, 7 p.m.: Lovers of opera often share a great passion for food. Italian composers such as Rossini, Verdi, and Puccini were great gastronomes; food and wine played a major role in their operas as well as their lives. Fred Plotkin, author of nine books about Italy, opera, food, and wine, will explore the intersection of cooking and opera, which together provide sustenance for body and soul. Mr. Plotkin teaches opera at NYU, writes for leading food, travel, and music media, and is often heard on NPR, WQXR and the BBC. 

Skin Care & Hair Removal: Wednesday, October 19, 7 p.m.: Carol Ann Boyd, a New York State certified esthetician and electrologist, will present this informative overview of proper skin care and hair removal techniques. 

Pete Fornatale: Back to the Garden: Wednesday, October 19, 7 p.m.: Widely respected rock historian and veteran disc jockey Pete Fornatale, host of the long-running weekly program Mixed Bag, which airs Saturday nights on WFUV, helped define progressive rock radio in the early 1970s. Television fans will remember him as co-host of the 1991 HBO telecast of Paul Simon's Live in Central Park, and from his regular stints as expert guest commentator on PBS specials featuring Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Orbison, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor and others.

Mr. Fornatale is the author of several books, including The Rock Music Source Book, Radio in the Television Age, The Story of Rock 'n' Roll, and All You Need Is Love. He will discuss his life and work, and present his well-received latest book, Back to the Garden: The Story of Woodstock, now out in paperback, which draws on original interviews with performers such as Roger Daltry, Joan Baez, and David Crosby to place the gathering against a backdrop of period history and culture. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Elder Law & Financial Planning: Thursday, October 20, 10:30 a.m.: It's important to structure a financial plan that will enable you to live a financially secure retirement. Discover a support network that will provide legal and financial planning services to protect you and your heirs. 

Start a New Garden from the Ground Up: Thursday, October 20, 7 p.m.: You want to plant a garden, but where do you start? Lucille Hoell will share tips on the various methods used to condition the soil and prepare successful beds, whether in sun or shade. 

Peter Maravell in Concert: Sunday, October 23, 2 p.m.: Bass baritone Peter Maravell accompanied by pianist Vladimir Polezhayev will perform arias, art songs, and show tunes from noted composers including Puccini, Rossini, and Gershwin. Mr. Maravell performs with the New York City Opera and is a former member of the Rome Opera Company. He was the winner of two Fulbright Scholarships to Rome, where he shared the stage with legendary Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli. 

Taking the Mystery Out of Mystery Writing: Monday, October 24, 7 p.m.: If you enjoy murder and mayhem and would like to try your hand at writing a mystery, come to this educational workshop with Marilyn Levinson, author of A Murderer Among Us. Ms. Levinson will discuss the basic elements of plot, setting, victims, suspects, clues, and red herrings, as well as agents, publishers, e-books, and the growing popularity of self-publishing. 

Dead Relatives Genealogy Group, Google On! Monday, October 24, 7 p.m.: During this casual monthly presentation, join other genealogy enthusiasts from beginners to pros and learn how you can make the most of your research. This month, check out what's new with Google and genealogy! Explore Google Books and Google Scholar, conduct name searches, and discover other fun stuff. 

Poetry: Verse in Person, Tuesday, October 25, 7 p.m.: Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. Mario Susko, a survivor of the Bosnian war, has lived in the U.S. since 1993. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stony Brook University and currently teaches at Nassau Community College. Dr. Susko is as an editor and translator, as well as the author of 30 poetry collections, most recently Framing Memories (Harbor Mountain Press, 2011). His work has appeared in journals and anthologies in the U.S., U.K., Italy, India, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, and Croatia. Special thanks to Mankh, member of the Performance Poets Association, for hosting this series.

The Lincoln Lawyer: October 6, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: A lawyer conducts business from the back of his Lincoln town car while representing a high-profile client in Beverly Hills.

Source Code: October 13, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: Soldier Colter Stevens travels back in time, where he witnesses a train bombing and has only eight minutes to determine who is responsible. 

Rango: October 20, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff. 

Insidious: October 27, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: A family tries to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

Foreign Film: Malena: Saturday, October 1, 2 p.m.: Set in a small Sicilian town during World War II, the story centers on a 13-year-old boy who falls hard for Malena, the town's most beautiful woman and the target of vicious gossip. Italian with English subtitles.

Film Discussion: Reel Rebels: Win Win, Tuesday, October 4, 6 p.m.: This sweet and well-crafted drama explores the quiet desperation of decent people searching for solutions to troubling circumstances. Intriguing, informative, sometimes controversial, but always thought provoking, this monthly series combines the best in film and discussion.

Wednesday Matinee: Bravo Pavarotti: Wednesday, October 12, 1:30 p.m.: Celebrate the great Italian tenor's birthday by reliving his unforgettable performances with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
