What's Happening at the Sachem Public Library in November?

Feature films and film discussions offer plenty to do.

Like every month, November will be packed with fun and entertaining things to do for the whole family at the Sachem Public Library. They will have a number of feature films and film discussions throughout the month.

Here's a look at what to expect:

Film Discussion: Reel Rebels, Winter's Bone: Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.: Intriguing, informative, sometimes controversial but always thought provoking, this monthly series combines the best in film and discussion. This month's selection is the Grand Jury Prize winner for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. Directed by Debra Granik. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, and Kevin Breznahan.

Opera & Art Film Series: Eugene Onegin: Wednesday, Nov. 10 1:30 and 6 p.m.: Renee Fleming, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Ramon Vargas triumph in Tchaikovsky's operatic masterpiece, filmed live in HD at the Met. The evocative staging highlights the personal drama at the heart of Pushkin's tragedy of unrequited love. (2007, NR-2:36)

Foreign Film: Not One Less: Saturday, Nov. 13 2 p.m.: In a remote mountain village, the regular teacher must leave his post and can only find a thirteen-year-old girl to take his place. She takes her new job so seriously that she refuses to lose even one student. Directed by Yimou Zhang. Starring Minzhi Wei, Huike Zhang, and Zhenda Tian.

Family Films for the Holiday Weekend: Planet 51: Nov. 26 11 a.m.: An astronaut lands on a distant planet and discovers a civilization that considers him to be a dangerous alien. Animated. Directed by Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad, starring Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, and Justin Long.

How to Train Your Dragon: Nov. 26 1 p.m.: In a world where dragons are feared and destroyed without question, a hapless young Viking learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed. Animated. Directed by Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders, starring Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and Craig Ferguson.

From Paris with Love: Nov. 4 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: A low-level intelligence operative working for the U.S. ambassador in France joins forces with an American spy to stop a terrorist attack in Paris. Directed by Pierre Morel. Starring John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Kasia Smutniak.

Dear John: Nov.11 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: A young soldier falls in love with an idealistic college student. Their continuous stream of love letters eventually triggers fateful consequences. Directed by Lasse Hallström. Starring Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, and Richard Jenkins

Invictus: Nov. 18 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: In an attempt to unite his apartheid-torn nation, newly-elected President Mandela enlists the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Starring Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon and Julian Lewis Jones.

Behind the Scenes of Photojournalism: Monday, Nov. 1 7 p.m.

During his 42-year career in photojournalism, Dick Kraus has documented controversy, scandal, triumph, and tragedy. In this multi-media presentation, Mr. Kraus will recount his memories of events such as JFK's funeral, the Amy Fisher scandal, and the crash of TWA Flight 800. Hear his stories and see the pictures that accompanied the headlines.
