Here's a look at what's going on at the Sachem Public Library in July:

Film Discussion: Reel Rebels, Waste Land, Tuesday, July 5, 6:00 p.m.: This month's selection documents renowned artist Vik Muniz's project at Rio's largest garbage dump, unfolding into a story about dignity, the transformative power of art, and the resilience of the human spirit. Intriguing, informative, sometimes controversial, but always thought provoking, this monthly series combines the best in film and discussion.

Meet the Author: Stephanie Cowell: Tuesday, July 12, 7 p.m.: Stephanie Cowell's fifth historical novel, Claude & Camille, is about the relationship between Impressionist master Claude Monet and his young love and beautiful muse Camille Doncieux. Meet the author and hear about how this enchanting and lyrical novel was inspired by a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Eternal India: Wednesday, July 13, 7 p.m.: Explore the people, culture, and exotic landscapes of India through this colorful multimedia tour by acclaimed photographer Michael Fairchild. Through his lens, Mr. Fairchild captures life in India's rural villages, as well as the palaces and fortresses of the Moghul dynasty, including the Taj Mahal. Touching imagery provides an affectionate portrait of India's people as well as the perilous plight of India's wildlife. This stunning presentation is set to an original score composed by Steve Gorn. 

Great Decisions Discussion Series: Topic: Horn of Africa: Monday, July 18, 7 p.m.: Since the early 1990s the U.S. has monitored the Horn of Africa due to security concerns. Internal instability, weak governments, regional rivalries, and a lack of development have resulted in an environment conducive to terrorism. Can the U.S. protect its national interests while mitigating the dangerous conditions in the region? Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson will lead this monthly discussion series of global hot topics. Pick up a copy of the readings at the Welcome Desk. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association.

Socrates Café: Tuesday, July 19, 7 p.m.: Exchange ideas with others while engaging in the Socratic practice of questioning. This new monthly group will be led by local resident Joan Logan. Stop by the Welcome Desk to pick up a selection of quotations on the idea of success, the topic for the first discussion. There are over 600 ongoing Socrates Café gatherings around the globe coordinated by hundreds of dedicated volunteers who are deeply committed to making ours a more participatory and inclusive world. 

Treasures of Korean Culture and Art: Tuesday, July 19, 6:30 p.m.: Once known as the Land of the Morning Calm, Korea now possesses one of the largest economies in the world. The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project will exhibit traditional paintings, objects, and costumes, and present two documentary films. Discover the artistic and cultural achievements of the nation's past as well as the industrial achievements of its present. Traditional Korean refreshments will be served. 

Meet the Filmmaker: Marino Amoruso: Legends of the American West, Wednesday, July 20, 6:45 p.m.: Winner of the prestigious Western Heritage Award for best television feature, this documentary film uses archival photos, classic art, historical footage, and spectacular dramatic re-enactments to tell the true story behind legendary Wild West figures including Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Wyatt Earp. As seen on A&E and the History Channel. Discussion with the filmmaker to follow the film. 

The 'Burning' Question: Is It Heartburn or Something More? Monday, July 25, 7:00 p.m.: Stony Brook University Medical Center gastroenterologists will shed light on the differences between heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's Esophagus, and esophageal cancer. The physicians will explain the advanced technology that is available to evaluate, diagnose, and treat these conditions. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

The Tourist, July 7, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: When Frank visits Italy hoping to mend a broken heart, he meets Elise and discovers that his perfect trip has become the perfect trap.

Foreign Film: Le Grand Voyage, Saturday, July 9, 2:00 p.m.: Reda, a young French-Moroccan, drives his elderly father on a pilgrimage to Mecca from the south of France. During the journey the two men learn to close the distance between them. Arabic & French with English subtitles.

Fair Game, July 14, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: During a crucial operation, CIA operative Valerie Plame finds her identity has been leaked by the government, endangering herself, her mission, and her family.

Tangled, July 21, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: Adventure grows to new lengths as a very sheltered Rapunzel escapes from her tower and convinces a charming thief to escort her on an amazing adventure. 

Tron Legacy, July 28, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.: On a search for his missing father, Sam, the son of a virtual world designer Kevin Flynn, gets pulled into the digital world that his father designed.

Outdoor Summer Performances

Ed Travers Band: Jimmy Buffett Tribute: Friday, July 8, 7:00 p.m.: Calling all Parrotheads! Break out your Hawaiian shirts and kick back to the Gulf & Western sound with the Ed Travers Band. This talented group is one of Long Island's premiere Jimmy Buffett tribute bands. As you listen to all your favorites, you'll swear there are palm trees growing in the garden.

The South Shore Syncopators present... Radio Nights: Friday, July 22, 7:00 p.m.: Experience a glorious evening under the stars. The South Shore Syncopators will recreate the golden days of the 1930s dance orchestras and the radio shows that made them famous, complete with period commercials, comedy, and banter. Hear the unforgettable songs of Bing Crosby, Helen (Boop-a-Doop) Kane, Eddie Cantor, Annette Hanshaw, Maurice Chevalier, the Boswell Sisters, Ruby Keeler, and Al Jolson, performed by a ten-piece ensemble with six vocalists and an announcer.
