A rundown of June events at Sachem Public Library.

June 2010 Gallery Exhibit: National League of American Pen Women, Suffolk Branch Member Show: Artists' Reception, Saturday, June 12, 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.

The Suffolk Branch of the National League of American Pen Women will exhibit original works by its membership at Sachem Public Library during the month of June in the Gallery and Display Case located in the Lower Lobby. An Artists' Reception will be held on June 12 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

The National League of American Pen Women was established in 1897 to bring together women who demonstrate creativity in art, writing and music composition. Over its history, the League has had such influential members as first ladies Florence Harding and Eleanor Roosevelt. The purpose of the League is to encourage and promote art education, support artistic creation and help members and non-members create art, writing and music of professional quality. In this exhibit, the League will display an assortment of paintings, photography and poetry.

The Art Encounter: Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m.

Strengthen your creative skills in The Art Encounter at Sachem Public Library weekly on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Do you have a desire to fulfill your passion for art? Artist Jack Dean leads this weekly gathering of art enthusiasts. Work in your favorite media, share ideas and learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your supplies and a work-in-progress, or start something new and have fun as you allow your creative energy to flow!

Accepting Life's Changes: Discussion Topic: Dealing with Grief and Loss: Tuesday, June 1, 7:00 p.m.

Richard Murdocco, PhD, Stony Brook University Medical Center, will help you explore your feelings and develop closure and healing at Sachem Public Library on June 1 at 7:00 p.m. In this meeting Richard Murdocco, PhD, Stony Brook University Medical Center, will help you cope with the emotional stress of illness. Fifth Annual Gallery on the Green: Sunday, June 6, Noon-4:00 p.m.

Sachem Public Library's annual outdoor art show will be held on Sunday, June 6 from noon to 4:00 p.m. This year's show will feature the work of over 40 adult artists, sculptors, and photographers. Meet the artists, discuss their work, and find out more about the pieces that capture your attention. You may discover that lifetime treasure, the perfect photograph, or a painting that touches your heart. This event is sure to be fun for your whole family. Budding Van Goghs can create to their hearts' delight at the Children's Services popular art table. In the event of rain the show will be held indoors.

Opera & Art Film Series: Wednesday, June 9, 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Enjoy the best of opera and art in this monthly series at Sachem Public Library. This month's film, Broadway: The Golden Age, will be shown on June 9 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. This exceptional documentary tells the story of legendary performers, composers and writers. Their tales are illustrated with amazing and rare archival performance footage, combined with home movies and photos from their private collections. Saving lives takes all types. Do something amazing today: Give blood at Sachem Public Library on June 11 at 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. If you are between the ages of 16 and 76, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health, register at the Library's Welcome Desk to help save lives. St. Petersburg Musicians: Friday, June 11, 7:00 p.m.

Experience the next generation of musical talent as students from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia perform at Sachem Public Library on June 11 at 7:00 p.m. Young musicians from St. Petersburg Conservatory including pianists, violinists, singers and others will perform solos and duets from a popular classical repertoire. These highly talented Concert Festival winners will be traveling from Russia to perform at Carnegie Hall and Sachem Public Library.

Michael Jackson Tribute: Sunday, June 13, 2:00 p.m.

CP Lacey, America's number one Michael Jackson tribute artist, will perform at Sachem Public Library on June 13 at 2:00 p.m. Direct from his Australian tour, Mr. Lacey will present selections of the King of Pop's songs from the 70s and 80s. Following this exciting musical tribute, enjoy a screening of This is It, a compilation of interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.

Fran Altemose is Retiring! Reception Sunday, June 13, Noon to 1:30 p.m.

Say farewell to Fran Altemose, Head of Community Services at Sachem Public Library, on June 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Library. Fran Altemose, Head of Community Services, has announced her retirement after 17 years with Sachem Public Library. Fran has single-handedly developed and shaped Community Services, offering a wide array of innovative programs. She developed Connections, the Library's homebound service, created Museum Adventure and supervised the transformation of the Library's newsletter. Through Fran's vision, the Library has received and implemented numerous national literary and exhibition grants. Please thank Fran for her innovative and creative approach to cultural enrichment at a reception in her honor. Light refreshments will be served.

Garden Thyme: Plant Exchange: Monday, June 14, 7:00 p.m.

It's time for the annual plant exchange during Garden Thyme at Sachem Public Library on June 14 at 7:00 p.m. What better way to share your gardening success than by sharing your garden! Vary your planting options by bringing your favorite plants to swap with other participants. Please pot or bag all seedlings, cuttings, perennials, small shrubs or tree seedlings. Label the plants you know and have the others identified. Show off photos of the full grown plants if you have them. Don't forget to bring a box in which to carry home your treasures.

Great Decisions Discussion Series: U.S.- China Security Relations, Monday, June 14, 7:00 p.m.

Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson, will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics at Sachem Public Library on June 14 at 7:00 p.m. China's influence is growing, along with its military expenditures. How will this growth affect China's relations with its neighbors and with the U.S.? Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson leads this monthly discussion of current global hot topics. Pick up the discussion copy at the Welcome Desk. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. Music of the Romantic Era: Tuesday, June 15, 7:00 p.m.

Sally Shorrock shares insights into the music of the Romantic Era at Sachem Public Library on June 15 at 7:00 p.m. Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Schubert…the list of 19th century romantic composers includes the most beloved of all time and exquisitely expresses the human condition in all its forms. Sally Shorrock will explore why this music still speaks to us so profoundly. Come be inspired and rejuvenated!

Trivia Night: Tuesday, June 15, 7:30 p.m.

If you're looking to get out, meet new people and have some fun, join your neighbors for a night of trivia and prizes at Sachem Public Library on June 15 at 7:30 p.m. Get ready to put your trivia knowledge to the test! It will be all fun and games as you search your brain for answers to questions in the areas of pop culture, show tunes, movies and more.

Healthy Lao Cooking:Wednesday, June 16, 7:00 p.m.

Penn Hongthong returns to share more delicious Laotian recipes to Sachem Public Library on June 16 at 7:00 p.m. Penn Hongthong, author of Simple Laotian Cooking and Healthy Lao Cuisine, will prepare Laotian dishes, both spicy and mild, using vegetables and fresh herbs but very little meat. Dishes will include: Honey Peanut Sauce, Lettuce Wrapped Striped Bass with cilantro and tomatoes, Lettuce Wrapped Chicken with mint and star fruit, and Coconut Sticky Rice. Books will be available for sale. Recipes will be distributed at the program.

The Defibrillators: Friday, June 18, 7:30 p.m.

The Defibrillators will perform a rhythm and blues style concert at Sachem Public Library on June 18 at 7:30 p.m. These talented Long Island Rhythm and Blues musicians present a humorous take on being part of the aging baby boomer population. The Defibrillators is comprised of notable, local performers including Sonny Meadows, Bob "Pops" Wescott, Sonny Speed, Sir Robert Langley, Bob "Buddy Boy" Catrano and Jon "Dr. Max" Foreman. Individually they are terrific performers with impressive musical portfolios. Together they'll provide a rockin' good time you won't want to miss!

Indian Classical Dance: Saturday, June 19, 1:30 p.m.

Discover the intricacies of Bharatnatyam in a performance by teens, ages fourteen through sixteen at Sachem Public Library on June 19 at 1:30 p.m. Bharatnatyam, the Indian National Dance, is a reconstruction of Cathir, the art of temple dancers. Originating in southern India, Bharatnatyam is considered a celebration of the universe through the celebration of the beauty of the material body.

When Celestial Bodies Collide: Eclipses & Other Phenomena: Monday, June 21, 7:00 p.m.

Astrophysicist Kevin Manning explores the causes of solar and lunar eclipses at Sachem Public Library on June 21 at 7:00 p.m. What brings about a solar or lunar eclipse? Astrophysicist Kevin Manning will explore the natural causes of these and other celestial events. Many fascinating photos will serve to illustrate these occurrences. Following the presentation, weather permitting, a powerful telescope will be set up in Inside/Out for viewing the Moon, the rings of Saturn and other beautiful objects in the night sky; weather permitting.

A Journey to the Galapagos Islands: Tuesday, June 22, 7:00 p.m.

Professional photographer Michael Fairchild will take you on a fascinating exploration of the Galapagos Archipelago at Sachem Public Library on June 22 at 7:00 p.m. This multi-media presentation gives an inside glimpse of unusual creatures and harsh volcanic habitats: a peaceful kingdom where a sense of wonder and discovery prevails. Michael Fairchild's photos have been published in National Geographic's "Wild Animals of the World" Calendar, Sierra Club Calendar, Fortune Magazine, Vanity Fair, the National Audubon Society's "Field Guide to African Wildlife" cover photo.

Book Discussion: So Long, See You Tomorrow: Wednesday, June 23, 7:00 p.m.

The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Helen Harris will discuss, So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell on June 23 at 7:00 p.m. On a 1920s Illinois farm, a man is murdered while the tenuous friendship between two lonely boys comes to an end. American Book Award winner William Maxwell delivers a masterfully restrained and magically evocative meditation on the past. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk. Book Discussion: Cry the Beloved Country, Thursday, June 24, Noon

The Sachem Library Book Discussion Group led by Ursula Bennet will discuss, Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton on June 24 at noon. In search of missing family members, a Zulu priest leaves his South African village to traverse the deep and perplexing city of Johannesburg in the 1940s. He grapples with saving his family from the brink of destruction as racial tension throughout Johannesburg hampers his attempts to protect his family. Smooth n Saxxy: The Curtis Haywood Band, Sunday, June 27, 2:00 p.m.

Soprano sax artist, Curtis Haywood will perform at the Sachem Public Library on June 27 at 2:00 p.m. Full of character and a strong back beat, Curtis Haywood's music provides something extra that distinguishes it from the ordinary. Curtis grew up listening to and learning from some of the greats: Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Bob Mintzer, Kenny Garrett, and his namesake 'King Curtis'. As a soprano sax artist, Curtis performs from the heart, bares his soul and draws his audience into soulful interpretations of R&B favorites and contemporary jazz originals. CD's will be available for purchase following the concert.

Book Discussion Series: America's Crisis: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War: Monday, June 28, 3:00 p.m.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, you are invited to attend a book discussion series to be held at the Sachem Public Library through June, 2010. This month's book, Out Of The Storm: The End Of The Civil War, April-June 1865by Noah Andre Trudeau, will be discussed on June 28 at 3:00 p.m. Firsthand accounts provide the groundwork for this compelling story set at the end of the Civil War. The book follows the complex course of events, from the final days of the Army of Northern Virginia through the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It culminates in the growing recognition in the South and the North that the war was well and truly over.

The Dead Relatives Club: You Are What Your Ancestors Ate!: Monday, June 28, 7:00 p.m.

Dig up your past with the Dead Relatives Club Genealogy Group at Sachem Public Library on the last Monday of each month. This month's gathering will be held on June 28 at 7:00 p.m. This month, discover the role food and drink played in your family history.

Verse in Person: Tuesday, June 29, 7:00 p.m.

Celebrate poetry at Sachem Public Library on the last Tuesday of each month. This month's reading will be held on June 29 at 7:00 p.m. Each month a guest poet presents a reading, after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month's featured reader is Keith Simmons. Mr. Simmons' creative efforts are divided between poetry, haiku, brief stories, lyrics and songwriting. Keith began writing songs and lyrics after picking up a Beatles songbook and learning guitar. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series.

Trash or Treasure: Wednesday, June 30, 7:00 p.m.

Ed Costello gives you the secrets to identifying hidden treasures in your own home on June 30 at 7:00 p.m. Do you have something that is old, unusual or perhaps even bizarre? Ed Costello will show you how to identify today's hottest antiques and collectibles. The first 40 to register will receive a verbal appraisal of one item.
