Tonight the Sachem Public Library will host its Adult Reading Club summer wrap-up party by hosting five local authors who have been published in the recent anthology "Long Island Noir." The anthology is a collection of dark short stories that take place in various parts of Long Island, including Ronkonkoma. Sachem Patch editor, Matthew McGevna, is one of the authors invited to read from his short story "Gateway to the Stars," which takes place in Mastic Beach and Westhampton Beach.
Over the summer, members of the Adult Reading Club were challenged to read and write summaries for five books. Now, as a reward, the members who handed in their summaries will receive a free copy of "Long Island Noir" and a chance to hear some of its authors read from their work and sign copies of the book.
The anthology is edited by Kaylie Jones, whose most recent work, a memoir entitled "Lies My Mother Never Told Me," chronicles her life as the daughter of famed novelist James Jones (From Here to Eternity; The Thin Red Line) and her rocky relationship with her mother, Gloria. Jones, who also contributed a story called "Home Invasion," will be on hand at the event to lead the discussion.
Steven Wishnia is the author of "Semiconscious," which is set in Lake Ronkonkoma and follows a journalist in pursuit of a crime in which a perceived Mexican immigrant is savagely beaten. Reed Farrel Coleman's story "Mastermind," takes place in Selden.
In addition to the readings and discussion, The Caravan Players will be there to present "Music of the Night." Night-themed refreshments will be served from Cheffe Colette, owner of Inn Spot on the Bay in Hampton Bays. Non alcoholic beverages will also be available from mixologist Sonia Youngs, including her signature drink, the “Negligee,” according to the library's event description.
Attendees can pick up their complimentary copy of Long Island Noir and a party wristband at the welcome desk.
