Broadway Night at Sachem North

High school drama club to host student cabaret.

The drama club at Sachem High School North will host Broadway Night, a student run cabaret June 4.

Students come up with sketches that are in between different musical numbers, which the students pick from Broadway shows. The musical numbers are either solos or small group numbers that are auditioned for or large groups numbers that are in every Broadway Night.

"Broadway night provides our students the opportunity to challenge themselves by performing songs that would not typically be found in our productions," said Jon Chiaramonte, the drama adviser at North. "Having a variety of songs also enables our audiences to experience a true cabaret-style production right here in Sachem."

The performance will also mark the last time seniors can perform at Sachem. At the end of the show, they officially say good.

"It is a fun event for the students who sit and plan every aspect of the show, from choosing hosts - like they do for Saturday Night Live - writing skits and planning choreography," said Denise Cortez, the other drama adviser. "It is a good group this year and I am really proud of them.  There are no divas but there are plenty of leaders."

A highlight of Broadway Night has always been the energetic hosts who help move the show along and introduce upcoming numbers. This year's senior hosts are Mike Burke, Bethany Rosen, Alyssa Palma, Christine Beaury, and Jackie Shine.

The junior host is James Stumper who will be grandfathered into senior host next year as part of the school's tradition. Possible numbers will come from shows like The Wedding Singer, Beauty and the Beast, Rent, and Little Shop of Horrors.

"After seeing the auditions, I am confident that the Sachem community will enjoy the many different selections of songs our students chose," Chiaramonte said.
