Week In Review: Holbrook Man Punches Woman At Jets Game, Sachem Alum's TedX Talk Online

A roundup of the top headlines in the area this week.

Holbrook Man Punches Woman at Jets Game

A Holbrook man has been caught on video punching a woman in the face following Sunday's Jets game at MetLife Stadium.

Kurt Paschke, who served three years in prison in the 1990s for a fatal stabbing behind a Sayville pizzeria, is seen on the video hitting the woman during a fight in the concourse after the Jets overtime victory.

Paschke and the woman he struck, Jaclyn Nugent, 26, of Boston, were both charged with assault and disorderly conduct by New Jersey State Police Tuesday. Two of Nugent's friends also face the same charges.

Police say Nugent and her friend Amanda MacDowell, 25, of Marlborough, Mass., punched and kicked Paschke in the body and head before the Paschke struck Nugent in the face.

“The women were the aggressors,’’ a law-enforcement source told the New York Post.

Paschke's family members have rallied to his defense.

"He’s the victim, really,” Colleen Paschke told the New York Daily News of her son, a Sachem High School graduate. “He was just concerned for his mother and himself.”

Kurt Paschke father, Kurt Paschke Sr., a retired Suffolk County cop, told Newsday that Nugent had been verbally abusive to his son and his friends during the game.

Kurt Paschke Sr. said Nugent "jumped" a couple who were at the game with his son as they were making their way out of the stadium, according to Newsday. That's when he says his son stepped in to protect his friends and his mother, who was nearby.

"This girl was charging him and punching him. She's no lady," Kurt Paschke Sr. told Newsday. "She was the aggressor. If she's gonna start a fight, what is my son gonna do?"

Shah spoke about challenges she faced in creating the repellant, being supported by her science research teacher as a mentor and her love of science.

"...You can start with a problem, or a question that you have, and through failures and through mistakes and through a brainstorming process you can come up with a tangible product," Shah said during her talk.

Police Nab Holbrook Man for Attempted Robbery of Islandia Eatery

A Holbrook man was arrested Tuesday evening for attempting to rob a local Subway restaurant.

Police said Patrick Piccola walked into the Subway restaurant in Islandia Wednesday night at about 6:35 and approached a clerk, pointing what appeared to be a gun. Piccola fled the store, located at 1750 Veterans Memorial Hwy without any money.

Fourth Precinct officers were in the area when an employee at a neighboring 7-Eleven noticed a man acting suspicious and asked a customer in the store to go outside and ask police if they were searching for someone. The man the customer described to police fit the description of the man who fled the Subway. Officer David Ferrara then walked into the 7-Eleven and arrested Piccola at about 7 p.m.
