A roundup of some free events after a hectic few weeks of holidays and shopping.

Tapped out from Christmas shopping? The "jing, jing, jingling" of Christmas you hear is just the few remaining quarters left in your front pocket? Or maybe you just want to unwind this weekend. Here's a roundup of some free events in the Sachem community you might like to know about.

Holiday Cookie Decorating

The Sachem Public Library is holding a group activity everyone can enjoy. From the library: Come and share one of the holiday season's most delicious traditions. Using fondant and royal icing, each family will decorate a dozen cookies from four popular varieties.

Holiday SoLI Concert

Also held at the library, the SoLI (Singers of Long Island) is a "collegial chamber choir featuring 24 accomplished musicians from across Suffolk County. They perform music from a wide variety of styles and cultures including madrigals, spirituals, and jazz. Selections for this special holiday concert will include works by Maeder, Hogan, Britten, Sweelinck, and Parker/Shaw."

Town of Brookhaven Polar Plunge

Probably not the most "relaxing" activity, but it's free and it could be fun. Join hundreds of other brave souls as they shed their clothes in mid-December and leap into the frigid waters of the Long Island Sound at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai.

The event will raise funds for the Special Olympics. Last year, more than 500 people attended.

Live Nativity Scene

Want to stay in the Christmas spirit? Looking for the more spiritual side of the holidays? From the Christian Church at Holbrook, who will "once again be hosting the annual Live Nativity Scene for folks in our community. Please join us in the re-enactment of the birth of our Savior with live animals, Joseph, Mary, shepherds, angels and the Baby Jesus. Everyone is invited inside the church for some cocoa, cookies and conversation."
