Sachem Patch Whiz Kids

Site launches new feature to honor kids every week.

Every week Sachem Patch will honor one deserving student in the Sachem Central School District with the title, "Whiz Kid."

Patch Whiz Kids: Tecumseh Elementary School's Weird Science Club

Key to awesomeness:  This first year club is open to only third graders and places emphasis on scientific concepts and cooperative group work. Run by Gina LoManto and Cindy Keck, the “mad scientists” take part in a different science activity each week. Some hands-on science activities include building film canister rockets to learn the law of action and reaction, mixing ink’s true colors to learn about chromatography, and creating fruity lip gloss by turning solids into liquids. The most popular activity is the Shake and Make Ice Cream. The club received such a huge response that it was divided into fall and spring sessions to accommodate the students.

Each time the students meet, they conduct hands-on science activities, learn new vocabulary and discuss the results. Each scientist is eager to try new science activities. They always come in sharing how they conducted the activities at home and the new results they found, according to LoManto.
