Sachem Library Seeks Sachem HS Yearbooks For Complete History

Public library is looking to fill gaps in its Reference stock of high school yearbooks.

The Sachem Public Library is asking for the community's help in completing its comprehensive collection of Sachem High School yearbooks, by either donating one the missing years, or lending it for digitization.

According to librarian Denise Heid Scarbeck, the Holbrook library is the sole source of high school yearbooks and wants to complete its collection for the sake of historic preservation.

"People might not want them anymore," said Scarbeck. "I know the schools don’t have it at all; we’re really the only place. It’s more for historical value; that’s really what the purpose is."

According to Scarbeck, the library placed an ad on Craigslist and posted a request on its Facebook page, stating that there are some gaps in its collection. They are looking for years: 1963, 1965, 1966, 1973, 1974, 1977 and any yearbooks prior to 1959.

"I don’t even know if any exist prior to 1959," Scarbeck said. "But if anyone has one earlier than that, we’d be glad to add it to our collection, or at least digitize it so we have a copy."

The library is asking for yearbooks for those years only. If you happen to have a copy of any of the requested years, contact the Reference Department at (631) 588-5024 ext. 244. Since the yearbooks are part of the library's Reference catalog, the books can not be checked out for personal use, so the books will always be available for in-library use.

Again, the yearbooks needed are for the years:

  • 1963
  • 1965
  • 1966
  • 1973
  • 1974
  • 1977
  • any years prior to 1959.
