Sachem Hosts 20th Annual Jeff Stone Memorial Run

A staple of Columbus day, run was held for the 20th time on Monday at Sachem East.

The Jeff Stone Memorial Run, an event held annually to raise money for scholarships in his name, was held for the 20th time on Columbus Day at Sachem High School East. 

Sachem students and children of Sachem employees, from kindergarten through eighth grade, participated in the event. Fourth through eighth grades participated in a one-mile run, while kindergarten through third graders took part in a 400-meter dash.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Abby Carrol ran away with the fourth grade girls race, finishing with a time of 7:46. That put her just five seconds behind record holder Mackenzie Coleman, who ran a 7:41 in 2007.
  • Ciara Murphy, in the girls 7th/8th grade race, also ran a great race, finishing just eight seconds behind the record of 6:07 in that race. Her 6:15 mile challenged the record held by Emily Hartman.
  • The race of the day was the 7th/8th grade boys race. It led off the day and saw the three top finishers – Joseph Vara, Ian Carroll and Matt Patsy – all cross the line within four seconds of each other. Vara was the winner.
  • Chippewa was the winner of the Robert McNeil Trophy for the top elementary school. Lynwood finished in second place. Samoset, who had the most finishers -16- and the most finishers under nine minutes, won the Tom Toscano trophy as the top middle school.

  • 4th grade: Boys: James Smith and Girls: Abby Carroll
  • 5th grade: Boys: Ian Carollo and Girls: Carolyn O’Brien
  • 6th grade: Boys: John Muller and Girls: Kaylyn Spotton
  • 7th/8th grade: Boys: Joseph Vara and Girls: Ciara Murphy
