Patch Picks: Top 5 Places to Get Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Sachem Patch tells you where to pick up fresh produce.

The summer is almost over (sorry for the reminder), which means that some fruit and vegetables will be going out of season very soon. So, you better start scooping that Long Island corn that you love so much. This week we tell you where you can purchase fresh fruit and vegetables in your neighborhood.

Sachem Patch picks the Top 5 Places to Get Fresh Fruit and Vegetables:

  1. J. Kings, 700 Furrows, Road, Holtsville: Every Friday and Saturday, J. Kings sells locally grown produce out of their parking lot from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Along with Long Island corn, squash and tomatoes, they sell a selection of bread and flowers. You can buy all of the ingredients for a full and filling meal at this weekly farmers market.
  2. Islip Farmers Market, Town Hall, Route 27A, Islip: This farmers market is open until November in the parking lot of the Islip Town Hall on Saturdays from 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. Among the local options, the selection includes organic fruit and vegetables, jams and jellies. There is even a petting zoo for kids and baked goods for those who want something a little less healthy.
  3. Giunta’s Meat Farms, 318 Portion Road, Ronkonkoma: This grocery store has a large selection of fresh produce, which even includes some unique items like the pluot (the hybrid of a plum and an apricot), papaya, coconut and calabasa. You may also be pleased by the prices on produce, common and unique.
  4. C-Town, 1105 Horseblock Road, Medford: Not many people are familiar with C-Town or what occupies their shelves, but there are a variety of options in this supermarket, especially in the produce department. There are even ethnic food items like plantains and yucca to try out. Take a pop by the well-priced bakery section too for something to pair with the fresh strawberries you purchase.
  5. Super Stop and Shop, 2308 North Ocean Avenue, Farmingville: The produce stand at this supermarket is abundant, but you may have to be very selective in order to get the freshest produce available. There are a variety of pears, apples and tomatoes to choose from, and if you can’t make it to the store to choose your own fruit, you can use the shop-from-home Peapod service and your groceries will show up at your doorstep.
