Holbrook's Thirsty Scholar is a Quaint Tavern

Located on Union Avenue, local watering hole is a great site to throw a few back.

Attention Sachem sports fans: If you are looking for a a place to watch your favorite team play other than your own house, and you want to eat a good meal and maybe play some pool, then you need to head over to the Thirsty Scholar Neighborhood Pub in Holbrook.

"We get mostly regulars, but they are all good people and everyone gets along," said Tiffany Tomashefsky, the pub's manager and one of the bartenders. "This is a nice local tavern."

Nice enough to keep her employed permanently when she only planned on staying for a little while.

"I am friends with one of the owners so I took the job but it was only supposed to be until I found an office job," she said. "But it's a lot of fun so I stayed."

The pub actually has four owners: Tomashefsky's friend Mike Landrigan, Ken Guidice, Nicky Guidice and Marc Zerlander. Three of the four owners also have other businesses ranging from a DJ company (Landrigan), electronics store (Nicky Guidice) to another club (Zerlander also owns Taboo in North Hempstead).

The neighborhood feel may also come from the fact that most of the owners are local and Tomashefsky lives nearby in Ronkonkoma.

"The worst part of the job is when the customers leave to go home, because they are the best part of working here," she said.

The pub features eight flatscreen TV's plus a big screen in the same room as the pool table. Anyone can ask to watch whatever game or sport they wish and one of the TV's is quickly changed to accommodate that request. Music is on all day long except during games and sports memorabilia is all over the walls to look at or admire.  The bar is stocked with all types of beer and liquor. But that is not the only reason the regulars visit.

"I am here because Tiffany is awesome and hot," joked one of the regulars, as he looked over to see if he got Tomashefsky's attention before he broke out into a big laugh. "I come here to eat. The food is great here, especially the BBQ chicken."

"The Philly cheese steak is also really good," said Tomashefsky. "And in a few weeks we will have a new, eight page menu of more dishes including more burgers, steaks, hot sandwiches, salads, wraps and other things."

The pub also gives back to the people we all depend on, offering discounted drinks on Saturdays to EMT's, firemen and firewomen and police officers. There are other specials for everyone during big sports events including free touchdown shots during Monday night football.

The Thirsty Scholar Neighborhood Pub is open seven days a week from 11:30am until 4am. It is located at 236 Union Avenue in Holbrook. For more information please call 648-9454.
