A Holbrook man who works as a manager at is now a millionaire thanks to a scratch-off game he purchased at a local card shop in Holbrook.
Nicholas Wodzenski, 32, won the $3 million top prize on the $100 million Spectacular game after purchasing the scratch-off on July 14 at Cards & Things on Union Avenue in Holbrook.
The owner of the store, Usha Patel, said Wodzenski ran back into the store, repeating "I won, I won," after scratching off the winning numbers. Patel said Wodzenski has been a regular customer of hers since she opened the store 28 years ago.
"I knew him from the time he was a kid," Patel said. "He was a very good kid, and I watched him grow up to be a very good man. He has a very nice family and I’m so happy that he won the lottery from my store."
The $3 million prize money is doled out as $125,000 a year for the next 20 years. Of that money, Wodzenski will clear a little over $99,000 dollars, according to a release put out by the New York State Lottery. The release states that Wodzenski plans to pay off some bills and buy a house.
Emails to the Wodzenski family were not returned, but on Sachem Patch's Facebook page, where we first broke the story, Wodzenski's wife, Dawn Wodzenski, expressed her elation at the news.
"We r still in shock I thought my hubby was joking when he said that he won. He's that type that always jokes around. This time is wasn't a joke lol," she stated in the comments thread.
