Grundy Student Is Finalist in 'Name The Mascot' Contest

Second-grader offers name "Laxer" for New York Lizards lacrosse team mascot.

A second-grader at Grundy Avenue Elementary School was most recently in second place in a contest held by the New York Lizards lacrosse team to name the team's official mascot.

Stephen Kirk entered the contest with the name "Laxer," which drew more than a quarter of support from the online poll of voters. Majority of support went to "Lazer." As of print time, the contest closed, but the official winner has not yet been revealed.

The New York Lizards, previously known as the Long Island Lizards, are a dominant team and one of the first teams in the relatively young Major League Lacrosse organization. The team, anchored by Sachem alum and Hofstra Lacrosse Hall of Famer Doug Shanahan, splits its home games between Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University and Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island in New York City.

The team is also cheered on with the help of the dance team director, choreographer and Sachem alum Paula Sanders. Sachem Patch will update the results when they become public.
