Great Escape: A Day at the Sachem Public Library

A weekly feature giving moms an idea of things to do.

Yes, the Internet's abilities are wondrous, and yes, an Amazon Kindle can download a book in seconds, but many people are still of the opinion that nothing beats sitting down with an actual book, newspaper or magazine. If you are one of those people, why not curl up with a good read at the library?

Of course, all libraries are made for reading. But with its very own fireplace lounge, the Sachem Library seems that much more inviting.  You do not even have to leave to have a cup of coffee or tea or to get something to eat. That's one of the benefits of the lounge.

Were you one of the millions of fans who watched the new TNT show “Rizzoli and Isles” last year? If so, maybe you would enjoy reading the book series it was based on by Tess Gerritsen.

Don't have time to watch all the Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray episodes you have on your DVR? Flip through a few of their cookbooks or magazines for recipes, ideas and other information you might have missed.

Are you planning a trip abroad this year? Why not try to learn a little of the native language of whatever country you are visiting with Mango Language or BYKI (Before You Know It) learning systems.

If you are tracing your own family tree, get some help from Ancestry the Library edition. Don't forget you can browse through the movies and music the library has available for rent on DVD's and CD's.

If you are new to Sachem or even if you have lived here your whole life, do you ever wonder what it was like 50 or 60 years ago? Search the Suffolk Historic Newspaper database for old stories relating to the town you call home.
