Doc Gooden, Cecil Fielder Kickoff Toy Giveaway in Holbrook

Helping out for the Chris Canty Foundation, athletes and community leaders hold special event for students in Lindenhurst hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy.

Doc Gooden, Cecil Fielder, Senator Lee Zeldin and Assemblyman Al Graf were among some of the special guests at today's toy giveaway event held in Holbrook to help bring smiles to the faces of children impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Students from Harding Elementary School in the Lindenhurst School District gathered at Prime Diagnostics Institute on Veterans Highway in Holbrook for a special day of pizza, games, toys and a chance to meet pro athletes, both of whom have World Series rings for the Mets and Yankees.

Lindenhurst was one of the hardest hit communities on Long Island, as Superstorm Sandy ripped through the waterfront community and displaced hundreds of citizens.

I don't think you can express what it means to them," said Sal Leto, a parent from Lindenhurst whose daugher attends Harding Elementary. "[She] can go home today; a lot of these kids can't. They're not gonna have the Christmas that they're used to having, so a day like this makes them forget a lot."

Patch will have more reactions to the event, including interviews with Gooden, Fielder, Zeldin and Graf to come.
