Cold Snap Expected to Ease Up By Wednesday Afternoon

Winds are expected to die down a bit by Wednesday, too.

Tuesday's frigid temperatures will be headed out soon across Long Island, with highs in the 20s expected by Wednesday afternoon.

According to Joe Pollina, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, on Tuesday, temps will remain in the mid-20s across Long Island, with lower numbers reported in Western Suffolk and into Nassau County, and slightly higher over the South Fork, around 26 degrees.

Long Island will see the warmer weather as the arctic high pressure over the area on Tuesday begins to moderate and push offshore; when that happens, Pollina said, winds become southerly, introducing warmer air into the area.

Overnight, though, residents should bundle up; the cold snap will continue, with temperatures in the single digits across Long Island, and in the teens, in some areas of the East End. Temperatures in the Pine Barrens will be as low as three degrees, Pollina said.

Tuesday's winds, which range from 30 to the mid-40 miles per hour range across Long Island, will hold steady on Wednesday at around 20 to 25 miles per hour across all of Long Island, Pollina said.
