Bone Marrow Drive Today For Sachem Alum

Family of Louis Segreto holding drive at The Bench in Stony Brook to raise awareness and find donor matches.

The family of a Sachem East Class of 2007 graduate is holding a bone marrow drive today at 10:30 a.m. after the Sachem alum and former athlete was diagnosed with leukemia in February.

Louis Segreto was diagnosed with the disease on February 1 and is being treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center. To help support his medical expenses and to find appropriate donor matches in the community, his family and friends pitched in to hold the drive at The Bench on Route 25A in Stony Brook.

The drive begins at 10:30 and will run until 5 p.m., and will feature a Chinese Auction, food and beverages for $30. Anyone in attendance over the age of 18 can volunteer to have their cheek swabbed for match testing.

Allysa Poggio, a close friend of Segreto, said he played football and lacrosse at East, and is known for his generosity. Poggio volunteered her assistance in getting the marrow drive off the ground because she wanted to show that same generosity.

"We want as many people to get out [to the drive]," Poggio said. "He’s a great friend; he’s always the type of person who was there for you."

The Segreto family has partnered with Delete Blood Cancer DKMS, a worldwide bone marrow donor center that helps connect patients with matching donors by organizing continual donor tests.
