Bone Marrow Drive For Sachem Alum A Success

More than 200 volunteers had cheek swabbed at supportive event in Stony Brook.

A big turnout arrived in support of Sachem East alum Louis Segreto, who was diagnosed with leukemia on February 1 and is being prepped for a life-saving bone marrow transplant at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Segreto's brothers Mark and Matt Segreto, along with other family members and friends, organized a bone marrow drive held at The Bench on 25A in Stony Brook on Saturday.

"Thank you all so much for your love, support and contributions towards the  #LOUISTRONG Bone Marrow Drive," Allysa Poggio, a close friend of Segreto, stated in an email to Patch. "It means the world to Louis and his family. The  outcome was such a success."

Poggio said that roughly 200 people were swabbed and had their candidacy added to the Donor Registry, which could help save not only Segreto, but others suffering from the disease.

For those who weren't able to attend, there's still an opportunity to donate, by visiting www.deletebloodcancer.org. Meanwhile, browse the photo gallery attached to see pictures of the event at The Bench.
