Big Ideas for Smithtown Roll In; Submit Yours Soon

Our community wishlist is growing, but there's still time to get your idea in before we set up our polls.

We had a very spirited debate on our post, "You Tell Us: Big Ideas for Making Smithtown Better," as a steady flow of locals joined to discussion to offer their ideas for improving the community.

Before we collect all of these and begin our polling process, we want to make sure we give everybody a chance to share. Remember, don't be afraid to think big. Think a monorail would greatly improve St. James, for example? Don't be afraid to share it. Well, maybe not the monorail idea.

Here's where our list stands so far:

  • Equal representation for all Smithtown communities on Smithtown board (Commack, Nesconset, St. James, etc.)
  • Tax incentives to spur Main Street businesses
  • Fix dangerous roads and intersections (Main Street, Landing and Edgewood Ave.)
  • Upgrade sewers and septic systems in business district
  • Address vacancies, forbid use of open space until vacancies are repurposed
  • Term limits for town supervisor
  • Clear development plan for Middle Country Road and Mains Street, targeting specific industries with tax incentives. (medical, food service)
  • Increase green space set-backs/landscaping requirements on main roads
  • Create a "restaurant row' at former Mandees space.

Huntington Main St should be a great inspiration to Smithtown Main St. l'm hoping it can be done here.

It will never happen with the current batch of people running the show, that much is for sure.

When the town was originally founded main st was I'm sure very much like a village. With over population main st cannot handle the traffic and this is why we do not have village feel. We can't afford to divert traffic to the residential streets as that will be a safety issue and bring down value of homes. That being ssid There needs to be a sense of village brought back and to do that you need to add the rotundas and get rid of the shopping center look by adding new store fronts closer to main st. You can add a road behind the shopping centers to divert some traffic as well. This will make it look more like a village. Maybe add more trees in that vast parking lots where la fitness is and ace hardware. Something needs to be done though because if not it will affect our home values and we will always have the spectrum of Main Street turning into a location for only bars and restaraunts.

Well hopefully the Bypass, when completed, will be used for just that...to bypass town. Lets face it, all the traffic cutting through during rush hour is focused on getting home, picking up kids, etc. Not a majority of out-of-towners stopping to patronize local businesses anyway.
