April 18: Lacrosse, Library Events, Defensive Driving

Here's what's happening today in the Sachem community.

Check this list everyday for a glimpse at what's happening around the Sachem community ... from school events to sports games and Town of Brookhaven and Islip functions, there is a sampling of everything.

1. Lacrosse: The Sachem East vs. Sachem North boys lacrosse battle will take place at 7 p.m. with two other games between lower level teams at the high schools happening at 3 and 5 p.m. They were postponed from the original Saturday start time.

2. Islip School Break Program: This school-break program is an interesting and creative way to keep children busy over the spring recess. Does your child enjoy the outdoors and creating art? Our young artists will take their inspiration from the earth, using themes and materials from plants, animals, geology and the forces of nature to create exciting projects. You have never seen an art program like this – guaranteed. Jeff Gottlieb, a naturalist and primitive technology expert, has been teaching primitive living skills for over 20 years. Gottlieb will be running this camp with the same emphasis as his summer Man in Nature Camps. Remember to send in lunch and beverages with your child. Click here to learn more.

3. Living with Better Choices: Are you 55 or older with an on-going health condition? Do you live with or care for someone with a chronic illness? Sign up for a free six-week Living Healthy Workshop, an evidence-based program developed by Stanford University, designed to complement and enhance medical treatment and disease management. People who complete the program feel better, are less limited by their illness, and may spend less time at the doctor or hospital. RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) is able to provide this valuable workshop through a grant from the Suffolk County for the Aging. Head down to the Sachem Public Library from noon to 2 p.m. for this function.

4. Defensive Driving: The Town of Brookhaven along with National Safety Council will be hosting classes at our local recreation centers and Town Hall. Classes are held in two 3-hour sessions. Participants must attend both classes to receive their certification. Click here to learn more.
