Girl Scout Troop 374 Completes Bronze Award Project by Honoring Local Veterans

A group of Sachem-area Girl Scouts recently completed their Bronze Award project by honoring some of Long Island’s veterans living at The Vets Place in Yaphank.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the first of three high honors awards that can be earned by Girl Scouts and must be completed by developing and executing a Council-approved community service project. The girls from local Troop 374, all fifth graders from Chippewa and Waverly Elementary Schools, prepared an Italian-themed dinner to thank the veterans for their service to our country.

The scouts spent several months planning the dinner, which took place in late April. They searched through dozens of recipes before selecting the final menu, designed decorative Thank You cards for each resident, purchased flag-themed paper goods, shopped for the food and helped to cook the meal for the vets. The girls completed the meal with home-baked coffee cake.

The residents were very appreciative of the girls’ efforts and said they loved having the Girl Scouts visit their home. One lucky veteran even received a free training session from the app-savvy girls on how to play games on his new iPad.

"We could not be prouder of the girls. They worked very hard and put a lot of thought into making sure that the soldiers felt appreciated. Everyone had a wonderful time at the event,” said Troop 374's leaders Michele Favaro-Campbell and Rosa Iacona.
