Centereach and Coram Residents Are Two of Five Students at St. John the Baptist DHS to Receive The Mary Grant Award For Overcoming Challenge Or Adversity

WEST ISLIP, NY – Five students of the graduating class at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School are the proud recipients of Mary Grant Award Scholarships.  Each student received a $1,000 scholarship after they submitted an essay about a time they overcame a serious disappointment, challenge or adversity and how that experience has affected them in a positive way. 

 Mary Corcoran, the award’s namesake, was a firm believer in the mission of Catholic Education and that every child should have an opportunity to be educated in a community where Catholic values are taught and lived.  Mary was a true role model for her “never give up” mentality and her positive attitude. She believed life is not about what is given to you, but what you make of it.

 This grant is being offered through the Make It Count Foundation, which serves as a catalyst for sustainable change within the lives of children, youth and those in need by ensuring that their fundamental health, housing and educational needs are met.

 Principal Nan Doherty stated, “We are truly grateful to Tom Corcoran and the Make It Count Foundation for awarding these grants to our students and for continuing Mary’s legacy.  We are very proud of each of these students and wish them the very best for the future.”
