District Study, Bus Issues, State Tests, Sums Up Sachem's Happenings

See what's on today's Sachem Patch agenda.

Here's a list of some of the happenings in and around Sachem on this Thursday, August 8.

Sachem BOE Discusses Redistricting. Last night the Sachem Board of Education heard bid proposals from two firms vying to handle the district's projected enrollment and redistricting study. The board is looking to tap a firm to conduct the study in the event it decides to close schools or enact other cost-saving measures. Patch will have more on this later today.

BOE To Address Busing Issue. The Board of Education also stated that it was not their intention to eliminate 4:45 p.m. bus service for middle school students when it originally signed off on transportation cuts in the midst of its budget hearings last spring. Now the board will need to find ways to put the funding for those bus routes back into the new budget number. Patch will have more in this later today as well.

Reactions To ELA/Math Assessments. Also today Patch will share local leadership reactions to yesterday's release of the ELA and Math results for Sachem, which show that only 35% of elementary school students and 45% of middle school students were proficient or better than proficient in either subject.

Movie Under The Stars. The Ronkonkoma Fire Department will be continuing its outdoor movie screening series, despite the continuing hiccups from uncooperative weather. Tonight, barring poor weather conditions, the department will be screening "We Bought A Zoo," starring Matt Damon. Bring a lawn chair and blanket. Tickets are $5 and there are $1 concessions at the counter. Movie starts at 8:30 p.m.

The Hurricane of 1938. For all you history and weather buffs, head over to the Bayport-Blue Point Library for a free lecture on the meteorological and historical aspects of the great 38' New England Hurricane, which devastated the east end of Long Island. Lecture starts at 7 p.m.
