WSHR Provides Real World Experience for Future Broadcasters

Sachem alum Angie Pavlovsky became an instant on-air personality at Utica College thanks to her previous experience.

You don’t have to look far to see the success of Sachem alums in the broadcast industry that began their careers at the school radio station, , currently known as The Arrow.

A new breed of aspiring radio professionals have hit the college scene by storm, armed with their valuable experiences from their scholastic days in Sachem, which offers one of the largest educational radio stations on the East Coast at 6,000 watts.

Angie Pavlovsky, only a freshman at Utica College, serves as the Public Service Director at WPNR Radio, 90.7-FM and hosts The Past Bowl with DJ Angie P.

“I was employed on the spot due to my experience and passion for my love of radio,” said Pavlovsky, who graduated from Sachem East last year. “With a huge experience boost from WSHR, I was on the air almost instantly.”

Pavlovsky credits WSHR General Manager Mark Laura as a guiding spark in her early career.

“He taught me everything I know,” she said. “The success it brought me, I was able to take the skills in high school and put them right into a college station.”

Majoring in broadcast journalism with hopes of being a reporter for Fox 5 in New York one day, Pavlovsky is dealing with the challenges of operating her own show from a talent and business perspective, two days a week.

“It was a bit of a change to go from having my best friend sitting next to me at every show [in high school] to a solo show every Tuesday and Thursday,” she said, “but it became easier over time.”

Pavlovsky began as a production assistant at Utica, was quickly promoted to Public Service Director, and now stands as one of the first freshmen in school history to be on the advising board at the radio station.

“I owe everything to Mark Laura,” she said. “He really cares for all his kids as if they were his own and has taught me everything I know. WSHR is the gateway to the field of journalism, being able to work on a radio station at such a young age made me realize it’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
