This Week in Sachem Football: Week 6

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week I'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. Here's the information from Week 6:

  • Sachem has started a season off 6-0 only six other times since the program began (49 seasons). This is the second consecutive season to accomplish this feat.
  • Dating back to the final game of the 2008 season, North has won 17 of its last 18 games.
  • Sachem has scored 229 points this season. The Arrows are quickly approaching historical numbers. With this week's win, Sachem passed the 1978 and 1983 teams (222) and the 2010 team is now the ninth all-time scoring team in Sachem history. Next on the list: 1977 (231), 1992 (234), 1997 (235), 2000 (254).
  • Sachem head coach Dave Falco was a member of the 1983 team, which also began its season 6-0.
  • If you're wondering, the fewest points allowed in a Sachem season was 35 in 1977. For this year's Sachem team to be in the top five in program history, it would need to stay within the 50 point range: 1980 (38), 1986 (44), 1961 (46), 1983 (56) and 1978 (59). It has allowed 43 points in six games.
  • Sachem has now scored 40-plus points in three of its six games this season and no fewer than 28 in a game.
  • Floyd is the only team Sachem plays this year that has an all-time winning record against it. The series is now 12-14.
  • Of the 12 wins, Sachem has scored 40 or more points twice against Floyd: 40-0 win in 1986 and 40-20 win in 1997.
  • Sachem has held Floyd to 6 or less points just three times in the series' history.
  • Sachem played Floyd in Week 2 of the 1961 season, the first year the Arrows existed and beat the Colonials, 25-0. The teams did not meet again until 1986, a 40-0 Sachem win.
  • Their last meeting was in the Suffolk County Division I title game last season, a 27-6 Floyd win.
  • Floyd has outscored Sachem, 567-397, all-time.
  • The 20 points Sachem scored in the first quarter were more than Floyd allowed in any previous quarter this season.
  • This is the first time since 2002 that William Floyd has lost back-to-back games.
  • Floyd has not allowed more than 28 points in any games dating back to 2004. Section XI doesn't keep online records prior to that year. The 28 points were scored this year by Bay Shore, a team that Sachem plays in Week 8 on the road.
  • Sachem is 33-16-1 in Week 6 games.
  • In his first eight seasons as head coach, Fred Fusaro's record was 33-32-1, while Falco sports a 39-29 mark.
  • Sachem is the only undefeated team in Division I. The other Suffolk County schools without a loss: Division II - Newfield, Division III - Islip, Division IV - Glenn, which is coached by Sachem alum Dave Shanahan and assistant Fred Fusaro. Nassau's undefeated schools: Oceanside, Carey, Lynbrook, Seaford and Roosevelt.
  • The Andreassi File: With his 18 carries and 118 yards against Floyd, he moved into 10th on Sachem's career rushing list. He has 1,496 yards on 232 career carries and 16 touchdowns. He passed Jason Kling (1,367). Next up is Walter Carey (1,539).
  • The Scanna File: For his four-year career at Sachem, he has 139 carries, 1,245 yards and 13 touchdowns (rushing). Scanna is the 13th all-time leading rusher in Sachem history. Clark's 1,296 yards are next in sight.
