Tecumseh Donates 50 Blankets to Animal Shelter

Student's vision to help animals led to school-wide initiative.

Tecumseh Elementary School is a community that has embraced many of the Covey initiatives set forth by school district administration. One specifically being to "Be part of the solution, not the problem."

Last year a student at Tecumseh, Jake Myers, an avid animal lover, visited a nearby shelter and was extremely upset when he saw how the animals slept. They were taken care of but slept on nylon cots.

He left the shelter that day wanting to do something to help. He, along with the help of his mother Kim, and his school, organized a blanket drive to donate so the animals could have a warm bed like him.

This year Tecumseh continued that drive and collected more than 50 blankets to donate to Save-A-Pet in Port Jefferson. Some families from the school gathered at the facility on Saturday, January 28 and were given a tour by Shelter Director Lynn Shoepfer.

“The children were proud to be a part of this effort to help the shelter,” said Kim Myers, who also serves as vice president of the PTA at Tecumseh.

One student, Corrine Ednie brought her change purse and donated whatever money she had collected to help the shelter.

"It’s a great feeling for the kids to feel and see they are making a difference,” said Mindy Forte, a parent of a Tecumseh student who helped.

Most of the children want to continue supporting the shelter and want to work on raising monies to help the animals. The Ednie family was so enamored with a dog they met they called the next day to adopt him and he was already promised to a good home.
