Sound Off: Is Enough Being Done to Combat School Bullying?

A Staten Island teen takes her own life Monday after being bullied by classmates.

On Monday, a 15-year-old from Staten Island, who relatives say was bullied at school, jumped in front of a bus and later died of her injuries, according to The Huffington Post.

Amanda Diane Cummings was carrying a suicide note at the time of the crash in Staten Island.

From Huff Po:

Cummings was a sophomore at New Dorp High School and according to the girl's uncle, Keith Cummings, she had been bullied by peers.

The relative spoke to the Staten Island Advance on the alleged bullying and said Amanda was tormented after bullies stole her possessions including her jacket, phone, and shoes.

He said they were even posting cruel, inappropriate comments on Amanda's Facebook wall while in the hospital after being struck by the bus.

Numerous Long Island school districts have instituted new anti-bullying policies and intensified education on the topic in recent years, but today's question: Is enough being done to combat bullying in schools?

My son was bullied for years at south ocean and the administration did nothing...the same kids are now harassing him at the high-school because south oceans bullying policy was so poor...the assistant principal. Mr Mendez was only counting the days until he would be principal at bay....he did nothing to help my son. I can be sure that his kids won't get the same treatment when they reach south ocean

In the good old days, we kids took it upon ourselves to beat the crap out of anybody who bullied. Results were usually successful without any parental involvement.

bullying is horrible and beating up the bullies worked when we were kids but now schools have zero tolerance policies so if your kid hits back no matter the situation they get suspended! Fair? No of course not! But administrators want to take the cover my ass attitude!

Please earlyriser, you are asking people to exercise personal responsibility !

Didn't you know that people can't take of themselves these days, and that the concept of "personal responsibility" is dead ?

We need someone to hold our collective hands and think for us !

We can't think for ourselves...we need Big Government to wipe our collective bottoms, if we soil ourselves !

We need Barak Obama to help us and save us from ourselves !

They want to say its a hands off policy so they can cover their own asses but they do nothing to help the kid being bullied....they were quick to tell my son about him being suspended if he hit one of them.

What have the Children of our Society done before all of these meaningless "Nanny State" regulations and Laws for what is personal behavior ?

I guess we all wandered around, aimless, waiting for Big Government to solve All Of Our Various Personal Problems and envelope us in a Bubble to protect ourselves from all the "mean and bad things" Life has to give ?

How did our Society get this far, and didn't destroy itself ?

I was bullied from like the 1st grade up until almost 10th. I've heard some messed up stuff, but life goes on. Combating bullies is never going to work completely, all you do is move where it occurs. Even if you can keep it out of schools 100% you still have people showing up at other people's houses, playgrounds (for younger kids), malls, and a whole bunch of other places. Bullying is a disease that can never be cured no matter how many antidotes you make for it.

Schools can only be responsible for bullying to a certain point. Its a learned behavior and its being taught at home. Children know how far they can push the limits at school and when they do get in trouble at school, their own parents will fight the schools to get them back in ultimately teaching the children that their rotten nasty hurtful behavior is accepted at home so it will always continue. Its an ugly cycle. Parents need to teach their own children not to be bullies and not to abuse others emotionally and physically. Laws need to be put in place to hold the parents more accountable.

Can't stop the bullying? Take your kid out of public school. It worked for me.

Schools should put time into working with the "bullies". Often the bullies are repeating a pattern learned at home.

We've been discussing about these bullying issues with my co-parents in school. And I believe it will be a great idea to teach our children a safety tip on how to deal with bullying. And as been noticed, bullied case has been increasing rapidly, so we've come of an idea to search for a mobile safety that will ensure our kids to be safe even when we're not around. Then we found this link http://www.tsue-thatswhatshesaid.com/2011/09/keeping-your-child-safe-supporting.html that talks about securing every family in modern way. You can also check that link for your own good.
