Sachem North Using Synergy to Fight Cancer

Don't be alarmed if you see Sachem North Principal John Dolan walking around town with his face painted.

He, along with his building, is helping raise awareness and money for cancer research for the next two weeks and has been walking the halls with "Cure It" written across his forehead.

If all goes right, Dolan will have his hair died a certain color next Friday during the school's March Madness tournament. He needs to reach 2,000 votes on the event's Facebook page for it to happen. Click here to help with the push.

"Here at Sachem, the energy at the schools and the teachers and [assistant principals] and Mr. Dolan, they want to make such a great environment for all of us to want to help and all of us to want to do good," said Caila Hendrickson, a freshman.

Mixing in , Sachem North is up to the synergy step, and is clearly working together to achieve their collective goals.

With help from the school's leadership team, the Dirty Dozen and a Half, there has been more signage and rhetoric in the hallways about the recent charitable efforts than ever before.

Last month, Sachem East and Sequoya Middle School raised over $62,000 as part of the , which North will also donate its funds to, along with the Marty Lyons Foundation.

The Sachem community has also been rallying as of late for North sophomore Nick Franzi, who is suffering from leukemia and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. Various have been taking place to find a donor.

"Sachem is a wonderful community," Dolan said. "The children of this community are incredible in terms of their giving and caring and a true absence of ego. They truly believe that they can meet any challenge and make the world a better place."
