Sachem Laxers Sign Letters of Intent [Video/Photos]

School holds ceremony for girls and boys headed to next level.

Sachem North held its annual college lacrosse signing session at the high school Monday morning.

Sixteen athletes, boys and girls, were recognized for signing to play at the next level. This is the largest amount of college athletes Sachem North boys lacrosse coach Jay Mauro has had on his roster. The total is currently at 13 if you count junior Tyler Andreassi, who gave a verbal commitment to Massachusetts.

“Through their hard work and dedication we’ve received a lot of treatment to our student-athletes, who have now decided to pursue playing at the next level,” Mauro said. “The coaching staff has done a great job developing these guys.”

Cody Petillo, who will play under Sachem alum at Rutgers next year, will be the fifth Petillo to play college lacrosse: father Rich (Hofstra), brother (Tufts), uncle Tony (Hofstra) and cousin Chris (Lycoming).

“Having a chance to play in college should be fun,” said Petillo, who is also a member of the football team, which is vying for a Suffolk County title against William Floyd this weekend. “It’ll be interesting and I’m looking forward to it.”

As for the girls, coach Ed Manly is hoping his team benefits from the talent of this years roster led by Nicole Dale, Kate Kuerner and Erin McNulty.

“These girls are the cornerstones of our program,” he said.

McNulty was ranked as the fourth best girls lacrosse goalie in the country by ESPN last month. Selecting to attend Binghamton and signing the letter of intent is a weight off her shoulders.

“I just have to stay on top of my school work and worry about basketball, and then lacrosse,” she said.

Kuerner will join her sister Kelly, who is a freshman at Stony Brook, while Corey will play with his brother Brandon at New York Tech. Brandon is transferring there for the spring from Massachusetts (read Patch Tuesday for more about this).

Petrone and Schulte will play for Sachem alum Brendan Chamberlain at Suffolk.

There will be around 50 Sachem alums playing college lacrosse this time next year.
