North to Host World Cup Racewalk Trials

Michta, Bresnahan to compete at old stomping grounds.

Sachem High School North will host the World Cup Racewalk trials Sunday, April 11.

It marks the first time world-class athletes, aside from the many talented high school performers over the years, will use Sachem's facilities for an event.

The IAAF trials are open to U.S. citizens eligible to represent the U.S. in May at the World Cup in Chihuahua, Mexico.

According to Alex Young, the girls varsity track and field coach at North, the 20K and 10K courses, as well as a developmental 5K course for young area racewalkers, will be held over a 2K (1.2 mile) loop extending from North's Octagon entrance through Burma Road to Samoset's 6th grade wing parking area.

Sunday's trial will be special for Sachem, as it marks the return of Maria Michta and Erin Bresnahan, two of the district's and Long Island's most accomplished racewalkers.

Bresnahan, a 2009 graduate of North, is a freshman at Cornell and won the Nike Outdoor Championship in the 1-mile racewalk as a senior last season. She placed 5th in the USATF Indoor National Championships last February in Albuquerque, N.M.

Michta, who graduated in 2004 – the last year before the district split –, is one of the most decorated racewalkers in the country. She is a three-time indoor state champion, a five-time national champion and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Mt. Sinai Medical School in Manhattan.

She is the nation's top-ranked racewalker and won a national racewalk title at the USATF's National Indoor Track & Field Championships in February (3,000-meter racewalk in 13:51.33).

"Sachem has a storied racewalk tradition that includes many county, New York State and national champion racewalkers," Young said. "Maria and Erin will enjoy a home court advantage along a course that both logged countless miles on during their respective high school careers."

The first race begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
