Lesko Halts Alcohol Sales in Brookhaven

Brookhaven Supervisor makes decision in wake of Hurricane Irene.

In response to the incoming Hurricane Irene, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko has ordered a halt of alcohol sales in the town as of 11 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from his office.

The supervisor told Patch late Saturday night he had received reports of bars and restaurants in town having "hurricane parties," and decided to order alcohol sales be stopped.

"Number one, people should not be out now. They should be home," Lesko said. "...and number two, the roads are dangerous enough right now, and we certainly don't need people under the influence driving around town. That's just too dangerous."

In Patchogue, mayor Paul Pontieri issued an order Friday that required bars and restaurants to close at 10 p.m., but Lesko said some establishments may not have been in compliance.

The executive emergency order comes as Irene is barreling up the east coast headed for Long Island.

It is unknown when the halt would be lifted.

Stay tuned to Patch for up-to-the-minute updates on Hurricane Irene.

I think government has oversteped its bounds. I don't drink at all but I think this is big gov . Just because Our President takes no personal responsibility doesn't mean everyone needs to be told what to do.

These Democrats are NOT a friendly bunch are they. Well, it's proven they are NOT entertaining or have a sense of humor.

FUNNY THING ABOUT THIS HURRICANE IS, it shows THE DEPTH of how the Tax Payers have NO FAITH IN OUR ELECTED OR NON-ELECTED PUBLIC OFFICIALS.

IF it's not New York City residents ignoring Bloomberg BY THE THOUSANDS, AND at their genuine peril, it's the FAKE "SUPERHEROES" STEVELEVYMARKLESKO ET AL finally becoming VISABLE FOR ONCE, and giving us advice about saving our lives during this storm.

THE UNFORTUNATE THING IS, ALL the evacuation orders, phone numbers and shelters are for our Safety and Own Good, and we have these hapless FAKE PEOPLE standing up there, who otherwise would be scheming against Us, trying to help us.

ALL OF THIS is indicative of how we feel let down by these JERKS, and the sad degree TAX PAYERS DON'T TRUST THESE GUYS AND GALS !

Like Rahm Emmanuel said, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” and these YOKELS like Lesko are no different !

These Democrats HATE people and businesses, so don't let their "ecomomic zone" posturing to fool you !

EVEN MR. "FAKE INDEPENDENT" MICHAEL BLOOMBERG wouldn't do this !

After that FAKE, tax payer paid for, "illegal gun sale sting" he engineered in AZ, he learned his lesson the hard way.

These days all he cares about is that you HAVE rubbing alcohol wet naps, for emergencies !

Along with a lot of idiots who would have been hanging out in bars and then putting 1st responders at risk when they got stuck on the way home. Nothing fuels the fire of over protective government nannies like stupid people who use no common sense.

what is wrong with all of you people making political commentary out of this. This has nothing to do with politics.if government did nothingthey would be criticized for not being prepared (such as Katrina) and when they prepare their criticized for being big government

1. Lesko is an elected politician for the Town of Brookhaven
2. EVERYTHING HE DOES, IS FOR A POLITICAL REASON ! IT'S HIS PURPOSE FOR LIVING !

Well one good thing, they won't lose any Town employees to the local "gin mills", where they can usually be found !
