Inside/Out Celebration at the Sachem Library

New garden will open on May 15 at library.

The Sachem Public Library through its services has always reached out to the community.  On Saturday, May 15 the outdoor extension to its already impressive facility, Inside/Out will literally bring them out into the neighborhood.

"In the summer months there is a need for programming space, especially for the children," according to library director Judith Willner.

The almost one acre landscaped garden includes a lawn plaza and "green" performance stage, a ribbon walk for strolling and jogging, several smaller gardens and discussion areas and an atmosphere that immediately puts one at ease.

For years the Sachem Public Library has been running Friday night music programs, either in its auditorium and courtyard venues or the parking lot.  Now these concerts have a permanent home filled with over 63 species and 233 varieties of plants.

During the warm weather, weekdays the staff will use the Inside/Out seating areas for story times, book discussions and their other programs.  But this is an outdoor extension of the indoor facilities, always open to the public during daylight hours.  It is even Wi-Fi enabled, so strolls and relaxing in the open spaces can include cyber space also.

The Inside/Out outdoor extension will hold a grand opening celebration on May 15th, beginning at 11 a.m. and running through 4 p.m. Come for their musical performances, garden lectures, a "living sculpture," children nature programs and at 2 p.m. a special family concert presenting "Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could."

The celebration lasts into the next day, where the Lawn Plaza and stage will host the "Something Special Big Band." This performance will begin at 2 p.m.  Rain or shine, the celebration will fill the weekend.  Bad weather will not even dampen the spirits, for all programs and performances will be moved indoors.

Two local businesses are helping to make this celebration a success.  The Whole Food store in Lake Grove has donated literally thousands of their cookies to keep both the young and old happy. Custom Catering of Riverhead is staffing the food and beverage portion of the event.  The Friends of the Sachem Public Library have been exactly that, supporting the Inside/Out facility with generous donations, the teak benches that offer rest and relaxation to all.

Come down to the celebration to join the Sachem Public Library family.  Stroll the walkways, sit in the Sculpture Garden, enjoy the performances on the Lawn Plaza and be sure to witness the dedication of the Contemplation Garden.

It will be named after Mary M. Martinez, a longtime former employee of the library.  In her will she left a legacy for the public library.  In life she realized the importance of the library to the community.  In her passing she wants others to enjoy the rewards in knowledge, enrichment and happiness offered by the Sachem Public Library.
