Bishop Honored at Sachem East Safe Driving Fair

Congressman receives 2012 Graduated Driver Licensing Champion Award.

In the middle of battle to hold onto his seat in Congress, Rep. Tim Bishop, D- Southampton, stopped by Sachem East Thursday to receive the 2012 Graduated Driver Licensing Champion Award during the school's summit on safe driving.

Sponsored by State Farm, the award is presented to elected officials who have supported and furthered graduated licensing legislation with an emphasis on safe driving for teens.

The award was presented to Bishop during Sachem East's fair in recognition of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

“We’re moving in the right direction as a country but a lot of the responsibility falls to you: it’s up to you to be responsible with the privilege of driving a vehicle,” Bishop told the students. “I’d like to thank Sachem East High School for opening their doors to this important event and salute all of our community partners in protecting the safety of our young drivers.”

The fair's participants included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Sheriff's Department, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and the Education & Assistance Corporation, which advocates for safer teen driving.
