All-Sachem Patch Fall 2011 Selections

A look at the top athletes in Sachem this fall.

The following athletes have been selected as part of the All-Sachem Patch team for the fall of 2011. Athletes are selected by the coaches at Sachem High Schools East and North and the editorial staff of Sachem Patch.

First Team

Sam Alvino, Sachem East field hockey: This season she was All-Division, All-State and All-Tournament at the state finals. Along with teammate Jordan Miller, they combined for 11 shutouts and each played a vital role in the team’s success this season en route to a state title. 

Tyler Andreassi, Sachem North football: Andreassi had a strong season as a full back and linebacker. He transitioned smoothly from his defensive end position as a sophomore. Andreassi has been an All-Sachem Patch selection for football and lacrosse in the past.

Mary Ansman, Sachem East girl’s swimming: Ansman, a four –year varsity swimmer and captain, she finished her high school season with her best season to date. “Mary has been a big asset to the team during her four years and has brought much energy and laughter into the pool,” said Sachem coach Kathleen Dugan. She will be leaving with two school records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. She has received All-League honors this season.

Kristen Bagley, Sachem East field hockey: A senior, she scored 15 goals and 8 assists. Bagley she started in every game, and was a fast forward with a nose for the goal. She earned All-Division and All-State selections this year. Bagley will play at Adelphi next year.

Brian Balsamo, Sachem East football: A junior WR/DB, Balsamo will be one of the top receivers in Suffolk next season. He caught a big 60-yard pass in the county quarterfinals against West Islip to open the game and many other big receptions in 2011. 

Matt Cahill, Sachem North boy’s volleyball: Cahill, senior middle blocker, recorded 179 Kills, .391 hitting percentage, 41 Blocks and 92 serve percentage. He was an All-County and All-Long Island selection this season also. “He is the focal point of our offense and has been for two consecutive years,” said coach Matt Rivera. “He has the ability to take over a game and posed the greatest challenge to opposing defenses.” The bigger the game the bigger Cahill played, recording 17 kills on 17 attempts (record) in our quarterfinal home victory versus Smithtown East. 

Jon Cariello, Sachem North boy’s volleyball: Cariello, a senior outside hitter, recorded 171 Kills, 7 Blocks and .295 hitting percentage. “Jon was by far our most explosive offensive player,” said coach Matt Rivera. “He is our number one outside hitter and led the team in attempts. He is the playmaker we get the ball to when we need a spark or a big play. Truly a great outside hitter and an awesome offensive force for us.” Cariello was an All-League selection in League I and was also an All County Tournament Team Selection. 

Jessica Caruana, Sachem East field hockey: Caruana, a senior, she scored eight goals and added seven assists. She was a captain and three-year starter. This season she was All-County, All-State and scored the game-winning stroke in the state championship in sudden death strokes. Caruana will play for New Paltz in the fall. 

Steve Casali, Sachem East football: Casali was the backbone of Sachem East football’s resurgence this year. He was an All-Division and All-County selection, and was nominated as a top running back and linebacker. 

Anthony Coccia, Sachem North boys cross country: He was the team's second runner all season and made the Suffolk County Best of Season list.

Randall Colson, Sachem East boys volleyball: Colson was All-County for the third year in a row. He is a senior captain and led the team in blocks and hitting percentage. 

Courtney Cohen, Sachem North girl’s soccer: She was Sachem’s workhorse in the middle of the field who is highly skilled and dangerous with the ball at her feet. 

Dalton Crossan, Sachem North football: This year’s Hansen Award as the top player in Suffolk county needs no introduction to this site. He put together one of the best careers and seasons of any player in Sachem football history. Crossan was also a First Team All-Sachem Patch selection last season for football and lacrosse.

Trent Crossan, Sachem North football: Only a sophomore, Crossan played just a few games before tearing his ACL. He was and will continue to be an integral part of the success of the football program. He will lead the Flaming Arrows for another two seasons. He was also an All-Sachem Patch selection last season.

Eric D'Allesandro, Sachem North boy’s soccer: A junior, D’Allesandro was also an All-League selection.

Brenna Dowd, Sachem East girls swimming: Dowd, a junior and three-year varsity swimmer, shouldered the workload of the team’s distance events and had a very impressive junior year. She was a part of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays that broke school records this season and also received All-League honors this season.

Colin Eberhardt, Sachem North boys cross country: Eberhardt was All-League, All-Division, All-County and Academic All-County this past season. He qualified for the NYSPHSAA State Championship meet and ran well enough there to qualify for the New York State Federation Meet. He was also our team MVP.   

Vin Fragale, Sachem North football: A captain this season, he was a vocal leader and helped guide a team with a majority of underclassmen. 

Zach Galluzzo, Sachem East boys soccer: Galluzzo, a junior, anchored the defense.  He assisted on the game-winning goal against Brentwood to win the League I title.  His defensive instincts are incredible and he has incredible vision. 

Chris Haun, Sachem North boy’s volleyball: A setter and senior this season, Haun recorded 649 Assists, 23 Blocks, 51 Digs and had a serve percentage of 93.2. He was the team’s only captain this season. He was a unanimous All-County selection and an All-Long Island selection. “In a program widely recognized for outstanding setter play, Chris has been a standout for two straight years,” said coach Matt Rivera.

Rachel Heymach, Sachem North girls swimming: Only a freshman, Rachel Heymach broke Sachem North's girls varsity diving record in a dual meet lat Sayville/Bayport/Blue Point. She scored 238.12 points, breaking the current record by 6. She also qualified for states this year. 

Vin Juliano, Sachem North football: Juliano, also a captain this season, helped block with the best of them this year. He was strong in his pursuit of opening holes. 

Nick Laffin, Sachem East boys volleyball: Laffin, a junior, was All- League this season and lead the team in assists. 

Kelly Lavan, Sachem North girl’s cross country: Lavan was an All-county and All-league selection 1st team. She set home a 5K course record on Sept. 27 vs. Ward Melville. 

Michael LoSchiavo, Sachem North boys cross country: He was Sachem's No. 3 runner all season and also made the Suffolk County Best of Season list.

Mike Marchello, Sachem East football: Marchello, a junior, was All-Division as an offensive and defensive lineman. He improved each week and was a presence on the field at all times. He’ll mature into one of the better linemen in the county next year. 

Erin McNulty, Sachem North girl’s soccer: McNulty was an All-County selection and a big part of Sachem’s playoff run this year. She is a fierce competitor and a team leader. 

Jordan Miller, Sachem East field hockey: A junior, she was an All-Tournament team selection this year. Along with teammate Samantha Alvino, they combined for 11 shutouts and each played a vital role in the team’s success this season en route to a state title. 

Shannon O'Hehir, Sachem East girls cross country: She was All-League, All-Division, All-County and a qualifier for the State Meet. She was a very consistent, strong runner who has proven herself at a young age, making it as an individual to the State Meet.

Alexa Orlando, Sachem East girl’s soccer: This season she was also an All-League, All-Conference and All-County defender. 

Chelsea Palma, Sachem North field hockey: Palma was an All-County goalkeeper. She was three-year varsity starter and had many impressive games this season recording 29 saves against Smithtown East, 24 against Harborfields, 21 against Sachem East, 19 against Northport. 

Kianna Papele, Sachem East girl’s swimming: The eighth grader and first-year varsity swimmer impressed this season. “In Kianna's first year on the team she improved in each and every meet,” said Sachem coach Kathleen Dugan. “Kianna is a hard worker who has a very bright future on the swim team.” This season she was a part of the record breaking 200 freestyle relay and is currently the only eighth grader on the girls varsity team to hold a record. Papele also received All-League honors this season. 

Rachel Paul, Sachem East girls cross country: Paul has had an impressive career running at Sachem East. This season she was All-League, All-Division, County Champion, All-County, Runner of the Year for Suffolk County, All-State, placed fifth at State Federation, fifth at NIKE Regional Championships, and qualified for Nike Nationals. She is the first XC runner in Sachem history to make it to Nationals. Paul will run at Georgetown. 

Zach Patsy, Sachem East boy’s cross country: Patsy was an All-League and All-Division selection. He finished 11th in the state qualifying meet and was an All-County Academic runner.

Alyssa Picascio, Sachem East girl’s soccer: This season was also an All-League, All-Conference and All-County defender. 

Vin Provenzano, Sachem North football: Provenzano was one of the best players in Division I this season on both sides of the ball. He tackled with a ferocious complexity and was always in the first place at the right time. Provenzano was also an All-County selection this season. 

Tim Raftice, Sachem East boys volleyball: Raftice had an All-County season as a senior captain and lead the team in kills.

Tom Rascona, Sachem East boy’s cross country: Rascona was All-League and All-Division. She finished 16th in the state qualifying meet and finished second in the sophomore Manhattan College Invitational Meet. 

David Reyes, Sachem North boy’s soccer: Reyes, a senior defender, was a team captain and an All-Conference selection this season. 

Joe Ryan, Sachem East football: Ryan, a senior captain, was All-Division and All-County. He was a tough leader who led by example and helped East have its most successful season ever. 

Tom Ryan, Sachem East football: Ryan, the twin brother of Joe, was a senior captain and offensive and defensive lineman. He was a strong leader and was All-Division this year. 

Ryan Scarpelli, Sachem East boy’s cross country: Scarpelli had a strong season. He was an All-League, All-Division and All-County selection. Scarpelli was a state meet participant. He won the Suffern Invitational (15:56 3-miles) with the fastest time of the day. 

Victoria Schmidt, Sachem North field hockey: Schmidt was All-county this year and All-county honorable mention as a junior. She was a team captain and three-year varsity member. 

Nick Schook, Sachem East boys soccer: The senior captain made All-Conference this season. He led the team in scoring with 8 goals and 8 assists. 

Jessica Smalling, Sachem North field hockey: Smalling was an All-County Honorable Mention selection. She was a team captain and two-year year varsity member. 

Jacob Starling, Sachem North football: Starling matured into a physical threat on the line and helped open holes for a talented backfield. He was also an All-County selection. 

Ashlee Thompson, Sachem North girl’s soccer: She was Sachem’s leading scorer and during the playoffs their player who consistently shut down the county's best offensive players. 

Andrew Tinari, Sachem East boy's soccer: A junior captain, he made All-Conference. Tinari had 2 goals and 7 assists this season, but anchored the best midfield in the county.  “His poise and patience of the game are rarely seen,” said Sachem coach Matt Stallone. “His senior season can be an incredible one.” 

Morgan Tinari, Sachem East girl’s soccer: She was an All-League, All-Conference, and All-County outside midfielder this season.

Katie Trombetta, Sachem East field hockey: A sophomore midfielder, Trombetta recorded 15 goals and 14 assists this year. She is a team captain and three year-starter. Trombetta is also a two-time All-County and All-State selection. She was also an All-Tournament selection for Long Island and New York State championships. 

Danielle Vazquez, Sachem East girl’s cross country: A senior, Vazquez was a varsity runner for all four years. This season she was All-League, All-Division, All-County. 

Valerie Zeffiro, Sachem East girl’s swimming: Zeffiro is a four-year varsity swimmer and team captain. She is leaving with numerous school records in the 200 Medley Relay, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay. She was a three time state qualifier and has received all county and all league honors. “She is a true leader and dedicated person and will be truly missed but we know she is on to bigger and better things,” said Sachem coach Kathleen Dugan. 

Second Team

Robert Caldwell, Sachem East boys soccer: A junior fullback, he had incredible patience on the defensive side. He matured into a solid defender that finished the season with 3 goals and 1 assist.  

Shayla Cosgrove, Sachem North field hockey: Shayla was an All-Conference selection this year as well. It was her first year on varsity as a sophomore.

Kaitlin DiMartino, Sachem East girls cross country: DiMartino is a sophomore and was All-League honorable mention and All-Division this year. She was consistently East’s fifth runner and team scorer.

Ryan Dippel, Sachem East football: Dippel was a second team All-Division selection as a junior WR/DB. He is a strong receiver with a great future.

Katie Doherty, Sachem East field hockey: This season as a sophomore she scored 9 goals and added 6 assists. Doherty was an All-County Honorable Mention and All-Tournament selection in the state finals. “Katie sees the field well, hard worker, and not only a good defender, but enhanced her game tremendously on the offensive end,” said Sachem coach Tina Moon. 

Morgan Genoino, Sachem East boys volleyball: A senior captain, Genoino was also All-League this season and led the team in digs.

Abigail Groffmann, Sachem East girls swimming: This was Abigail’s first season on the Sachem East girls varsity swim team and was a huge asset throughout the season. “Abigail is an extremely hard worker and really came on strong at the end of the season,” Sachem coach Kathleen Dugan said.

Emily Hansen, Sachem East girl’s soccer: This season Hansen was an All-League and All-Conference center midfielder.

Brianna Harris, Sachem North girl’s soccer: She was Sachem’s sweeper who is an outstanding one-one-one defender.

Erica Magalhaes, Sachem North girls soccer: She came on strong the second half of the season and the playoffs as well. Sachem coach Claude Amallobietta said she is one of the most coachable players on the team.

Kayla McKevney, Sachem East field hockey: She scored 6 goals and added 5 assists this year as a junior captain. She was also an All-County Honorable Mention selection this season. “Kayla played at her utmost best and had top notch game in the state championship final for the win,” said Sachem coach Tina Moon. “She has a natural touch on the ball, and creates a lot in front of the cage.”

Katie Michta, Sachem North girl’s cross country: Michta was an All-county third team and All-League honorable mention selection this season. 

Shawn Murphy, Sachem North boy’s volleyball: A senior libero, he recorded 66 Digs and 21 aces. He was an All-League selection. “Shawn ran all our free ball plays and was the leader of our serve receive and defensive alignments,” said coach Matt Rivera. “The team's top passer and defensive player Shawn's performance was a driving force behind our success this year.”

Kyle Nasso, Sachem North boy’s soccer: Nasso, a senior forward, was a team captain this season and an Academic All-County selection. This season he scored three goals and 1 assist. He had 8 career goals and was a three-year starter. 

Rob Neubert, Sachem East football: Neubert was second team All-Division as a WR/DB this year. He was an emotional leader on this team who earned the respect of all teammates. 

Melanie Notarstefano, Sachem East girls cross country: A senior, she was selected All-League this season. Notarstefano was battling an injury on and off throughout the season but when healthy, she ran extremely well. She was Sachem’s second runner for VVS Invitational and third runner for Brown XC Regional Championships.

Carla Palma, Sachem East girls swimming: This was Palma's first season on the Sachem East girls varsity swim team. She came on to the team late but very quickly made her presence known. Palma was part of the 400 freestyle relay that broke the school record this season and will be a huge asset on the team for the next few years.

Nestor Payne, Sachem East boys volleyball: Payne, a junior, was All-League Honorable Mention this season and lead the team in blocks. 

Malik Pierre, Sachem North football: Only a sophomore, Pierre came onto the scene as a top rushing threat for Sachem this year. He will be a vibrant part of the offense for the next two seasons and showed great promise in his rushing ability. 

Anthony Riggi, Sachem East football: Riggi was a second team All-Division selection as a senior quarterback. He got better each day, was a real strong leader and his teammates really believed in him. 

Anthony Ross, Sachem North football: Ross, like Pierre and Trent Crossan, helped anchor a sophomore class that will be potent for another two seasons. He is a strong threat out of the backfield. 

Laurie Semetsis, Sachem East girl’s soccer: She led Sachem in scoring this season with 6 goals and 5 assists. 

Will Silber, Sachem East boys soccer: Silber was a team captain who finished his career with 13 shutouts, 11 of which were this season. His height and athletic ability make him a solid goalie. He has the knack for making the big time save and was an Academic-All County selection.

Nicole Silvestre, Sachem East girls cross country: A sophomore this year, she was All-Division.  She was strongest when it counted most.  She was helpful with East’s 3rd place finish at County Meet and 8th place finish at the State Federation Meet.  

Steve Surico, Sachem North boy’s volleyball: A senior outside hitter, Surico recorded 160 Kills, a .333 hitting percentage, 11 blocks, 34 digs and 14 aces. “Steve is a two-year varsity starter that is our emotional leader on the court,” said coach Matt Rivera. He was an All-League selection for the second consecutive year.  He plays all six rotations on the court and played over 90 percent of total minutes throughout the season.

Rebecca Teta, Sachem North field hockey: This season she was also All-Division. Teta was a team captain, and three-year varsity member.

Laura Young, Sachem East girls swimming: Young, a senior four-year varsity swimmer, was a great team leader and is always willing to step up when needed. “Laura had a very successful senior season and helped her team to a winning season,” said Sachem coach Kathleen Dugan. “Laura will be missed next season but we wish her the best of luck.”
