All-Sachem Patch Spring 2011 Selections

A look at the top athletes in Sachem from the past few months.

The following athletes have been selected as part of the All-Sachem Patch team for the spring of 2011. Athletes are selected by the coaches at Sachem High Schools East and North and the editorial staff of Sachem Patch.

First Team

Michael Andreassi, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Though hurt for half the season with an elbow injury, Andreassi started the year strong and looked great in a heightened role as a passer and scorer. “He worked extremely hard and was a warrior for us his whole career,” said Sachem coach Jay Mauro. “He helped put us back on the map as a program.”

Justin Carlo, Sachem North Baseball: Had a .346 average, eight doubles, one home run, 20 RBI, 16 runs scored, a .426 on-base percentage, and .481 slugging percentage. 

Brian Castles, Sachem East Baseball: A junior short stop, he hit .434 with 12 RBI, 5 doubles and 1 triple. He walked 7 times and had a .523 on-base percentage. “Brian was a key player for us this year,” said Sachem coach Kevin Schnupp. “He had multiple key hits and was a valuable shortstop all year.  Brian made hard plays look easy.” He was also and all-league and all-county selection.

Kayla Cataldo, Sachem North Track & Field: Was a state championship qualifier and a county champion in the pole vault. Cataldo was also all-division in 400-meter hurdles, all-league in the pole vault and was the top dual meet point scorer for Sachem North.

Brittany Christiansen, Sachem East Track & Field: Christiansen was an all-county shot putter and a state qualifier. She threw a 39’7” school record and had the second best throw in Suffolk County this season and eighth best in New York.

Jared Cohen, Sachem North Boys Tennis: Competed on the No. 1 doubles team and had only one loss in the regular season along with Fletcher Sadler. Cohen is only a freshman.

Dalton Crossan, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Only a junior, Crossan is already one of the best athletes Sachem has ever seen. He proved himself on the football field as a first team selection in the fall and was equally as impressive in the spring, scoring 59 goals, ranking in the top five all-time in a single season in Sachem history.

Jill Donodeo, Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: The senior midfielder has been one of the top players to graduate from Sachem East. She helped lead the Flaming Arrows to the playoffs this season.

Colin Eberhardt, Sachem North Track & Field: Ran the 800-meter run in 2:02.48 and ran a 2:02.21 on the 4x800 relay team. He was also an all-league selection this year.

Joe Eiseman, Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: Eiseman is a sophomore and a two-year starter. He was selected All-Division this year and handles multiple tasks on the field from midfield, offense, defense, extra-man, man-down and face offs. He scored 10 goals and recorded 7 assists this season.

Brendan Gamblin, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Gamblin transferred into Sachem from Hicksville prior to the season. He had one of the most explosive offensive single seasons in the history of Sachem lacrosse. “The most explosive middie around and plays 100 mph,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. Gamblin, who was selected to the Under Armour All-American team, scored 50 goals this year and will play at the University of Massachusetts.

Brendan Garry, Sachem North Baseball: Garry, one of the best catchers in Suffolk County the last two seasons, hit .440 in 2011. He recorded 37 hits, 4 homers, 24 RBI and scored 22 runs. He had a .531 on-base percentage and only made two errors all season behind the plate.

Kristine Gay, Sachem North Softball: Gay was selected All-Division after hitting .340 with a .938 field percentage and scoring 14 runs this year.

Alex Harris, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: A polished long stick defender, Harris will play college lacrosse at Division I Stony Brook next season. “One of the best defensemen around,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. “Great kid who plays extremely hard. Never gives up.”

Victoria Hassett, Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: Hassett won the Linda Otten Award as the top female athlete in Sachem East this year. The three-sport athlete was an integral part of the lacrosse team this spring.

Brian Hennelly, Sachem North Baseball: He was 5-1 on the mound in 43.2 innings pitched and had a 2.40 ERA. He also hit .322 with three doubles, nine RBI and scored 16 runs.

Chris Kennedy, Sachem East Baseball: Led the team with five homers and added 11 RBI. He scored 19 runs and hit .365. “Chris' offensive ability was a key to our season,” Sachem coach Kevin Schnupp said. “When he hit we won. Chris has power to all fields and was one of our key players all year.” The junior was also an all-league selection this year.

Kelly Kuerner, Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: Kuerner scored 53 goals and added 18 assists. She was also and All-County selection.

Samantha Laird, Sachem East Softball: Laird was also an All-County selection this season and an integral part of East’s success while she was on varsity. 

Tim Lang, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Scored more then 25 goals and was a consummate leader on and off the field. He’ll play college lacrosse at University of Maryland Baltimore County next year. “Great lacrosse IQ and his better days are ahead of him in college,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. “He got better each year.”

Kelly Maranchuk, Sachem East Track & Field: She was All-County in the 1,500-meter racewalk with a time of 7:02.14, the third best in Suffolk and fourth in New York. 

Greg Markfelder, Sachem East Boys Track: The senior high jumper had an impressive season. He reached a jump of 6’10” and was a county champion. He was also a three-time All-League selection, two-time All-Division and two-time All-County. He was a team MVP and holds the school record in the high jump. 

Eric Martin, Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: A senior and two-year starter, Martin was also an All-Division and All-County selection this year. He led East with 28 goals and 10 assists for 38 points.

Erin McNulty, Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: McNulty was third in county in saves averaged with 10.8 a game and was also an All-Division selection this season.

Mike Moynihan, Sachem East Boys Golf: The senior had a 6.13 scoring average and was a two-time all-league selection.

Rob Neubert, Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: A junior and three-year starter, Neubert plays offense, defense, extra-man, man-down, and on faces off.  He scored 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points this season.

Melanie Notarstefano, Sachem East Track & Field: Was All-County in the 400-meter dash and was a state qualifier with a 58.12 school record. That was the fastest time in Suffolk County.

Dean Papakonstantis, Sachem East Baseball: He hit .308 with 1 homer and 8 RBI. He was 3-3 on the mound with a 1.96 ERA. He also struck out 35 hitters compared to 7 walks. “Dean was one of our key leaders this year,” said Sachem coach Kevin Schnupp. “He was a bull dog on the mound and kept us in every game.” He was a two-time all-league selection. 

Rachel Paul, Sachem East Track & Field: Was All-County and a state qualifier in 800-meter, 1,500-meter. She was the eighth best in the state in each as well.

Jenna Pierro, Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: Pierro scored 25 goals and added 11 assists. She was also an All-Division selection this season.

Dylan Quintana, Sachem East Tennis: Along with brother Jason, is one of the greatest tennis players to ever hit the courts at Sachem. The senior was All-League, All-County, All-Division and All-State. He was an undefeated Division champion, placed third overall in Suffolk County and sixth overall in New York State in doubles. As a singles player he as also undefeated.

Jason Quintana, Sachem East Tennis: Along with brother Dylan, is one of the greatest tennis players to ever hit the courts at Sachem. The senior was All-League, All-County, All-Division and All-State. He was an undefeated Division champion, placed third overall in Suffolk County and sixth overall in New York State in doubles. As a singles player he as also undefeated.

William Ruth, Sachem North Boys Golf: He was the team's top golfer this season. Ruth missed the second day of counties by two strokes as a junior. “He’s like having an assistant coach on staff,” said Sachem coach Anthony Falco. “He works his butt off and one of the most dedicated kids I have seen in a while.” His stroke average for matches was 5 over par.

Alex Saavedra, Sachem East Track & Field: Arguably one of the best athletes to walk the halls of Sachem East, Saavedra won the Richard Van Norr Award for that side of the district as the top male athlete this year. He ran the 3,200-meter run in 9:23. He will compete at SUNY Buffalo next year and is a three-time All-League and All-Division selection and holds the school record in the 3,200 and 1,600. 

Fletcher Sadler, Sachem North Boys Tennis: Competed on the No. 1 doubles team and had only one loss in the regular season along with Jared Cohen.

Samantha Smith, Sachem East Softball: Smith, who will play college softball at Fordham, was an All-County selection this season. She hit .754.

Alec Sole, Sachem North Baseball: Led the team with 46 hits, including 33 singles, 7 doubles and 6 triples. He recorded a hit in all 26 games North played this season. He stole 13 bases and also recorded 28 RBI, 29 runs scored and only struck out five times all season. Sole, who will play college ball at Division I Saint Louis University, hit .505 with a .578 on-base percentage, .714 slugging percentage and was 6-2 on the mound with a 1.23 ERA, striking out 56 hitters, compared to the 14 he walked. 

Jessica Sweeney, Sachem North Softball: Sweeney was named Team MVP and earned All-Division honors. She batted .400 with 4 home runs, 17 RBI and scored 18 runs.

Lindsey Treanor, Sachem East Softball: Treanor was All-County and was named League I Pitcher of the Year.

Katie Trombetta, Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: Trombetta makes another All-Patch team thanks to her skills that have her playing far beyond her years as just a freshman this past season. She has a bright future in field hockey and lacrosse and yet again was a major reason for the success of the Flaming Arrows this past spring. She was also and All-County selection this season.

Mike Vitale, Sachem North Baseball: The senior pitcher was 8-2 on the mound this season with a 1.89 ERA. He also struck out 47 batters compared to the 20 he walked.

Christopher Weilbacher, Sachem North Track & Field: Ran the 400-meter dash in 52.22 and only lost one dual meet the entire season. He also ran a 1:58.9 leg on the 4x800 relay team. He was an all-league selection.

Keira Wood, Sachem North Track & Field: All-County in the 800-meter run, League II middle distance runner of the year, all-division in the 800-meter run, academic all-county and New York State Scholar Athlete.

Second Team

Mike Amato, Sachem East Baseball: Hit .279 with 11 RBI and scored eight runs. He was 3-3 on the mound with a 2.11 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Amato was also and all-league selection. “Mike took the ball for us every first game of the series,” Sachem coach Kevin Schnupp said. “His maturity this year as a junior helped us stay in playoff contention all year.”

Angelo Armine, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: “A jack of all trades,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. “He was important in every aspect of the game that doesn't get recognized on the stat sheet.” Armine, who quarterbacked the football team in the fall and was an All-Patch selection then as well, will play college lacrosse at Molloy.

Cassie Asselta, Sachem East Softball: A sophomore, Asselta hit .453 and was also an all-league selection.

Amanda Catherall, Sachem East Track & Field: Sixth best in Suffolk and eighth best in the state in the 1,500-meter racewalk.

Nicole Dale, Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: Before missing the last four games of the season, Dale had 22 goals and 11 assists. She has been extremely consistent in her time on the varsity.

Alyssa Furlani, Sachem East Track & Field: All-county in the racewalk, recording the sixth best time in Suffolk and seventh best in the state.

Alyssa Genduso, Sachem East Track & Field: Was All-County in the long jump and was fifth best in the 100-meter dash in Suffolk County with a  time of 12.34. She was fourth best in the 100-meter hurdles in Suffolk, six best in 200-meter in Suffolk and fifth best on long jump in Suffolk.

Fred Golini, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Golini one the presented to the player in Suffolk County who overcame adversity. He was also a hell of a talent on the field and will take his skills to Hartwick College next season. “Great d-middie who played hard,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. “Great clearer and good athlete.”

Nicole Healy, Sachem East Girls Golf: Healy, a sophomore, was the team’s top golfer. She was all-league this year and finished No. 27 in the Suffolk County tournament. 

Vincent Juliano, Sachem North Track & Field: Threw shot (39’6”) and discus (117’8”).

Kelly Lavan, Sachem North Track & Field: All-league in 3,000-meters, New York State Scholar Athlete and ranked fifth this season on the team in dual meet points scored.

Holly Lindoe, Sachem East Track & Field: All-County with the seventh best time in Suffolk and ninth best in the state in the 1,500-meter racewalk.

Jessica Mazliah, Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: She scored 17 goals and added 22 assists  en route to an All-Division season. 

Kara McCabe, Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: A leader on defense, McCabe has been a strong part of this team since she started playing on the varsity level. Her presence on the field will be missed.

Kristie Michta, Sachem North Track & Field: All-Division and all-league in high jump, ranked fourth on the team in dual meet points and was a New York State Scholar Athlete.

Ryan Mullins, Sachem East Boys Golf: The senior had a 6.8 scoring average and was a three-time all-league selection.

Meg Nee, Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: Nee came to play everyday and did her part in making the Flaming Arrows a playoff contender in 2011.

Niki Nevola, Sachem North Softball: Nevola hit .311, drove in 11 RBI and had a .963 fielding percentage this season.

Chelsea Palma, Sachem North Softball: Palma hit two home runs and recorded 14 RBI, while obtaining a .903 fielding percentage in 2011.

George Raum, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: A team captain who was awarded the Player’s Player Award at the end of the year for a reason. He bleeds Black & Gold and is the true definition of what it means to be a Sachem athlete. “He worked extremely hard to improve himself and the team,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. “A true team leader.” Raum will play college lacrosse at national runner-up Adelphi next year.

Alex Rosenfield, Sachem East Tennis: Rosenfield will play No. 1 singles for East next year. In 2011, he had a solid season and helped Sachem charge all the way to the Elite 8 round of the Suffolk County playoffs.

Jesse Scanna, Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: “A gamer who was important to our defense and transition game,” Sachem coach Jay Mauro said. Scanna played long stick and happened to score a handful of goals this season as well. He’ll play college football at SUNY Cortland. He was a First Team All-Patch selection for football.

A.J. Solomito, Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: A sophomore and two-year starter, he scored 25 goals and 13 assists for 38 points. 

Carly Swinford, Sachem North Track & Field: Division I champion at high jump, all-division in high jump, all-league and New York State Scholar Athlete.

Anthony Telesca, Sachem East Baseball: Telesca showed tons of poise as a sophomore. He hit .321 and recorded 2 home runs and 3 RBI. On the mound he was 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in five games. He also struck out 28.  

John Vigh, Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: A sophomore and two-year player he was tied for most goals and most points and was the team’s most improved player.
